Dwyane Wade: Why Miami Heat Superstar Was in the Right Against David Stern

Justin WeltonOct 1, 2011

The Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade got in a verbal confrontation with NBA Commissioner David Stern during labor talks on Friday. Wade got “angry” when Stern started to point his finger at Wade during his verbal spout. Wade did what any millionaire superstar should do in that situation, and that is stand up for himself.

Not in too many cases can an employee stand up to the boss, but not too many cases involve millionaire superstars. He can do whatever he feels like doing; he is Dwyane Wade, after all.

"Don't point your finger at me!" the Heat guard yelled at Stern. "I'm not a child." This came after Wade, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony threatened to leave the meetings early. Players Association executive director Billy Hunter reportedly talked them into staying for another hour.

Maybe Wade did more than he thinks bringing this out to the public like it did. Maybe Stern will feel pressure to get this deal done because more people are talking about it now.

Joining Wade, James and Anthony were Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Knicks owner James Dolan, Heat owner Mickey Arison and eight other owners were on hand.

There isn’t a clear finish line in the lockout. Unlike the NFL, money is a real issue in this situation. Also, as much as people dislike Roger Goodell, I had much more faith in a deal getting done by regular season time. The same cannot be said about Stern.

He seems like he is prepared to sacrifice games in order to get exactly what he wants. According to the New York Post, “Stern said his cryptic remark meant once regular season games are canceled, both sides would dig in their heels even deeper.”

“Bargaining in good faith” was the remark from Stern. He is prepared to go to the end of the cliff to get what he feels is right.

The regular season is slated to start later this month. If a deal doesn’t get done in the next week or so, we just may see some regular season games missed in 2011.

Last season was one of the most talked about NBA campaigns in recent history. It would be a shame to see the NBA follow it up with a shortened season.

The question is: Is Stern willing to jump off the cliff?
