New York Jets vs. Oakland Raiders: Last-Minute Spread Info and Predictions

Mike ChiariSep 25, 2011

The 2-0 New York Jets are flying high into Oakland this weekend where they'll take on the 1-1 Oakland Raiders at O.co Coliseum. The Jets are coming off a 32-3 romping of the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Raiders limp into the contest after blowing an 18-point lead to the Buffalo Bills in Week 2.

The Jets have picked up where they left off last season by using smothering defense to overwhelm their opponents. New York was in line to lose Week 1 to the Dallas Cowboys, but a key special teams play and a late interception helped key their comeback.

Prior to Oakland's disappointing Week 2 collapse against Buffalo, the Raiders scored a nice opening-week Monday night victory against the Denver Broncos. The Raiders were keyed by Darren McFadden and the running game which totaled 190 yards.

These teams possess an interesting contrast in styles as the Jets count upon a stout defense and the Raiders employ a power running game. Something has to give between these two teams who are jockeying for position in the AFC early in the season.

Prediction

There is no question that the New York Jets are expected to win this game, but the Raiders certainly won't go down without a fight. Oakland will want redemption after letting a win slip through its grasp last week, so the Jets will have to be careful not to overlook the Raiders.

One positive to take out of Oakland's loss last week is the fact that it seemed to develop some confidence in the passing game. Quarterback Jason Campbell through for over 300 yards while rookie receiver Denarius Moore broke out in a big way.

The Jets will likely stack the box to stop McFadden, so Campbell will need another big week if the Raiders want a shot at the upset. New York, on the other hand, has deviated from its reputation as a power running team and begun to spread it out on offense.

Quarterback Mark Sanchez has looked pretty good over the season's first two weeks and should be in line for a nice game against Oakland. The Bills picked apart the Oakland secondary with a spread attack in the second half last week, so New York will probably look to do the same.

While I don't want to dismiss Oakland completely in this game, the Jets are simply a much more well-rounded team and should be able to take care of the Raiders.
