NHL Free Agency: Islanders Sign Reasoner, Kabanov on Day 1
The NHL saw many players signed on the first day of free agency. The Islanders made their first signing a few hours in, inking veteran center Marty Reasoner to a two-year deal worth $2.7 million.
Reasoner, who is 34 years old, had the best offensive year in his 12-season NHL career with 14 goals and 32 points in 82 games with the Florida Panthers. Reasoner has 96 goals and 255 points in 706 career games.
Reasoner was a good signing for the Islanders. He should be a fourth-line center, and is a good faceoff man and penalty killer. He will bring good, veteran leadership that this team needs.
Today, the Islanders also signed their 2010 draft pick, Kirill Kabanov, to a three-year entry-level contract. The Islanders drafted Kabanov last year with the 65th overall pick.
In 39 games in the QMJHL with Moncton and Lewiston, Kabanov scored 11 goals and finished with 28 points. He also scored eight goals and 20 points in 15 playoff games.
The Islanders havn't been very active thus far, but will, of course, look for more options. The FA market this year is very thin, and most of the upper-tier players were signed in the first five hours of the free agency period.
The Islanders could be looking for a trade for a good player, and this could be the reason why it's been a slow day for the Islanders. We will all have to wait and see what their next move is.
