Tito Ortiz's Twitter Fiasco and the 20 Most Outrageous Moments in MMA History

Nick CaronJun 3, 2011

If you haven’t seen it yet, don’t worry, you’re not going to see the leaked Twitter photograph of Tito Ortiz’s “manhood” in this article. Sorry, folks who were looking for it, you’re going to need to search elsewhere.

But this crazy moment reminds us that it’s not just 40-plus-year-old future Hall of Fame NFL quarterbacks who have been caught, literally, with their pants down.

As mixed martial arts continues its push to become a mainstream sports in the eyes of fans across the country and specifically in the media, there are incidents which come along and make us remember just how different mixed martial arts is.

It’s not that crazy things don’t happen in other sports, but for a sport as young as mixed martial arts is, it certainly takes the cake when it comes to crazy things happening in and out of the cage.

Here are the top 20 most outrageous moments in MMA history!

Tito Ortiz Releases a Photo of Little Tito

1 of 20

Known for being one of MMA’s most regular users of the social media tools Twitter and Facebook, Tito Ortiz took it to a new level earlier this week.

Though he claims that he was “hacked” and that he did not send it out, a full-frontal nudity shot of Ortiz is now making the rounds on the Internet.

Now Jenna Jameson isn’t the only one whose naked pictures are floating around on the Internet for the world to see!

Rampage Jackson Humps a Reporter

2 of 20

Whether it’s his wearing a chain around his neck to the cage, howling into the sky or getting freaky with reporters; Quinton “Rampage” Jackson is certainly a character, isn’t he?

In this interview from the Pride days, a language barrier between Jackson and a Japanese reporter contributes to some hilarious results. Only in Japan, right?

Cro Cop loves it.

Rampage Jackson Humps a Reporter: Round Two!

3 of 20

Perhaps I spoke too soon with the “only in Japan” comment, huh?

Prior to his time working on The A-Team Movie, Jackson spoke with reporter Heather Nichols about his potential of getting into acting.

Things seemed normal until she brings up an idea for a romantic comedy starring herself and Jackson.

That’s when Rampage’s sexuality gets the best of him.

Watch as this awkward humping scene goes on for over 30 seconds. Hilarious.

Jason Miller’s Interruption Causes a Riot in the Cage on CBS

4 of 20

Unfortunately, it can sometimes be difficult to get high-quality footage of the events; but this video should at least give readers the gist of what happened on the last Strikeforce on CBS event.

Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields had just defended his title against Dan Henderson in a tough, tightly-contested fight.

During the post-fight interview, Shields was surrounded by his fellow Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu training partners, including Gilbert Melendez and both Nick and Nate Diaz. Then Mayhem ensued.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller stepped into the cage and interrupted Shields, asking him, “Where’s my rematch, buddy?”

Shields was caught off guard by this comment and tried to push Miller out of the way, but things escalated very quickly when Nick Diaz threw a punch.

Referees and members of both Shields and Henderson’s camp had to restrain the fighters in what is now commonly referred to as the “Nashville Brawl.”

Nick Diaz Wants to Slap Ariel Helwani

5 of 20

Prior to his most recent title defense against Paul Daley, the always unique Nick Diaz had another very awkward interview with MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani.

Diaz insisted that the reporter, known as one of the most prominent figures in mixed martial arts media, was trying to instigate fights between the fighters.

Helwani does his best to play it off, but Diaz just continued at him in a very odd and malicious fashion that included a suggestion that he should be slapped.

Rampage Jackson “Trolls” Ariel Helwani Before and After UFC 130

6 of 20

As if he didn’t have it bad enough in the Nick Diaz interview, things got even weirder for Ariel Helwani before the UFC 130 event last weekend.

It’s still up for debate whether Quinton “Rampage” Jackson was just messing with him, but there were four straight different interviews at different times throughout the past few weeks in which Jackson made Helwani’s job extremely difficult.

The one you see here is likely the most infamous of the bunch, but there were others as well.

What a weird guy Rampage is...

Dana White Goes off on Sherdog Reporter

7 of 20

Typically when the face of a huge, worldwide company speaks out in public, he or she is dressed up, in a studio, and prepared to make a professional statement. Dana White isn’t that kind of guy.

After a report came out from Sherdog’s Loretta Hunt which used some “anonymous” quotes from various people, the UFC President posted an extremely controversial response on his video blog.

Nakao Yoshihiro Invades Heath Herring’s “Personal Bubble” and Pays the Price

8 of 20

In one of the most hilarious moments in mixed martial arts history, “The Texas Crazy Horse” Heath Herring lost his cool during the pre-fight stare-down in the center of the Pride ring.

While the referee was explaining the rules of the fight, Japanese fighter Nakao Yoshihiro and Herring went face-to-face, like so many fighters do just before they throw down.

But this wasn’t a normal stare-down. Instead, Yoshihiro actually leaned in and kissed Herring.

You can see the look of confusion on Herring’s face as he tried to comprehend what had just happened. But just a split second later, he unleashed a hellacious punch right to to the jaw which knocked Yoshihiro clear out.

Fight over.

Gilbert Yvel Punches out a Referee

9 of 20

We’ve seen cases of fighters losing their cool and landing illegal shots to their opponents before, but this incident with Gilbert Yvel takes the cake.

After a string of questionable calls which Yvel deemed to be unfair, the Dutch mixed martial artist turned his frustration on the referee in the fight, flooring him with a punch before kicking him on the ground.

Obviously, this led to the fight being called and a spot on this list of the most outrageous moments in MMA history.

Wanderlei Silva Wants to WHAT Chuck?

10 of 20

During the days of the UFC vs. Pride, there were few fights that fans wanted to see more than the showdown between 205-pound kingpins Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva.

Contract issues made it unlikely that we would ever get to see the dream bout, but when Pride was sold in 2007, that fight actually became a real possibility.

So when Wanderlei Silva made his return to the UFC cage wearing his Pride t-shirt, fans around the world listened in as he spoke out about what he wanted to do to Liddell.

Listen in as one of the most famous quotes in the sport’s history is uttered on live television.

Tim Sylvia’s Bathroom Problem

11 of 20

It was long believed that the rumored “incident” involving Tim Sylvia and Assuerio Silva from UFC Fight Night 3 was just an urban legend. But it later turned out that Sylvia admitted to it all.

If you’re not up-to-speed on what I’m talking about, be prepared to cringe.

Prior to the fight, Sylvia was supposedly battling a flu as he prepared. During the bout, his stomach began to rumble and he couldn’t keep in his “number two’s.”

If you watch the fight closely, you can see a brown stain on the back of his pants.

Rampage Jackson Motorboats a Reporter

12 of 20

Okay, Rampage, seriously?!

Quinton Jackson loves him some ladies, there’s no doubt about it. The former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion is constantly talking to the fairer sex in interviews and even right after fights such as at UFC 130.

But this interview with MMA HEAT’s Karyn Bryant after his victory over Matt Hamill is even crazy for Rampage. Like Vince Vaughn in the movie Wedding Crashers, Jackson describes what he would like to do next.

Matt Lindland Knocks Himself Out

13 of 20

As one of the best wrestlers in MMA history, Matt Lindland isn’t the kind of guy who you would expect to see failing miserably on a takedown. But that’s not what happened in this particular fight against Falaniko Vitale at UFC 43.

Lindland was attempting to bring the fight to the ground when he seemed to slip and smack the back of his own head on the mat, knocking himself out in the process.

Nate Quarry vs. Kalib Starnes

14 of 20

Mixed martial arts is supposed to show who the most bad-ass fighters on the planet are, but the UFC 83 fight between Nate Quarry and Kalib Starnes did anything but that. In fact, it was what may be the most despicable performance in the history of the UFC, and probably the entire sport.

Quarry did his best to bring the fight to Starnes, but it wasn’t meant to be. Starnes bounced away from him for nearly all three rounds, seemingly attempting to set the UFC record for least total number of strikes landed in a 15-minute bout.

At numerous times throughout the fight, Quarry can be seen doing the “Running Man” dance move as well as some weird cross-armed hammer-fist type motion while slowly walking toward Starnes, just doing anything he can to get his opponent to engage.

This disgraceful performance would eventually be the end of Starnes’ UFC career, as he claims he asked for his release shortly thereafter.

Brock Lesnar’s Post-Fight Rant at UFC 100

15 of 20

As MMA’s biggest draw, a former superstar in pro wrestling and a one-time aspiring NFL player, one would assume that Brock Lesnar should have a pretty good understanding of what is and isn’t acceptable behavior in the media. Apparently he didn’t, at least not yet, at UFC 100.

After gaining retribution for what was at that time the only loss in his MMA career against Frank Mir, Brock Lesnar went off on one of the most memorable post-fight interviews that we may ever see.

Not only did he go out of his way to bash the event’s biggest sponsor while promoting one of their competitors, Lesnar proceeded to mention that he was probably going to “get on his wife” later that evening. Wow.

He would later apologize after being confronted by UFC President Dana White, but the damage was done.

Anderson Silva Humiliates Forrest Griffin

16 of 20

Perhaps the most dominant champion in the history of the UFC, Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva made history by competing as a light heavyweight and knocking out James Irvin in the first round of that fight.

After winning back-to-back fights at middleweight in the following months, it was time for Silva to make his return to 205; this time against a former champion, Forrest Griffin.

Many expected that Griffin would give Silva a run for his money given his natural size advantage and general toughness. But what ended up happening was one of the most one-sided, humiliating beatdowns in the history of the sport.

Silva literally toyed with Griffin, dancing out of the way of his punches before landing one quick punch to the jaw to end the fight. When it was all said and done, the normally very vocal Griffin ran out of the cage and to the back.

The legend of “The Spider” only continues to grow to this day.

Mark Coleman Trips While Celebrating His Pride Grand Prix Win

17 of 20

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Mark Coleman was one of Pride’s most prominent heavyweights for years. It all started at the Pride Open Weight Grand Prix tournament in 2000.

Coleman ran through Masaaki Satake in the opening round before defeating Akira Shoji, Kazuyuki Fujita (Fujita’s corner threw in the towel immediately) and the legendary Igor Vovchanchyn in one night.

His post-fight celebration was full of emotion, but it was also full of massive amounts of fail as he tried to jump over the ropes and into the crowd.

Joe Rogan Compares a Cut to a Part of a Goat’s Anatomy

18 of 20

Due to the fact that he’s a comedian, and a pretty vulgar one at that, it can be assumed that we’re going to hear some pretty racy things coming from Joe Rogan’s mouth when he’s on television.

But I’m pretty sure this one caught everyone off guard.

When discussing a cut on Marvin Eastman’s head caused by Vitor Belfort in a previous fight, Rogan refers to the cut as a “Goat’s...”

Well, I’ll just let you listen.

Dana White Is Furious at Anderson Silva

19 of 20

Imagine Roger Goodell saying that Peyton Manning is boring and not worth the fans’ time. Or David Stern saying that LeBron James doesn’t try. Hard to imagine?

Well that’s exactly what happened following Anderson Silva’s less-than-stellar performance against Demian Maia at UFC 102, when Dana White destroyed his champion in front of the media.

For awhile, it seemed like the UFC and Silva may actually be going their separate ways, but things seem to have cooled down now and the UFC appears to be actively looking to setup an eventual pound-for-pound showdown between the still undefeated-in-the-Octagon Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre.

Keith Hackney Goes Low on Joe Son

20 of 20

It’s always good to save the best (or worst) for last, right?

In the early days of the UFC, rules were essentially non-existent. Fighters from many different disciplines came together and pitted their skills against one another in an effort to prove who was the toughest man on the planet.

It was essentially legalized, caged, televised street fighting.

The only difference is that in street fighting, there are some unwritten rules. No biting, no pinching, no eye-gouging, and no groin strikes. Right?

Well for Keith Hackney, groin strikes became a primary weapon in his fight with Joe Son at UFC 4 tournament. Hackney unleashed not one, not two, not three, but six punches directly to the groin.

These punches are still remembered, nearly 17 years later, as one of the craziest things that has ever happened in a mixed martial arts bout.
