Fights to Make After UFC 130

Jordy McElroyMay 30, 2011

UFC 130 didn't necessarily blow fans away, but it was a decent night of fights with a couple of wrinkles in the natural order of the welterweight and bantamweight divisions.

Rick Story picked up a huge upset win over highly ranked welterweight Thiago Alves.

Despite being in phenomenal shape, Alves wasn't able to withstand the consistent pressure from Story's takedowns.

For a long time, the UFC welterweight division has been topped by Georges St-Pierre, Jon Fitch, Thiago Alves, and Josh Koscheck. It may be time to include Story's name along with the upper-echelon welterweights.

In the bantamweight division, Demetrious Johnson took the biggest victory of his career with a unanimous decision win over former champion Miguel Torres. If people didn't pay attention after his victory over Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, they are certainly paying attention now.

Johnson boasts some of the most explosive takedowns in the sport, and he should be taken seriously as a legitimate threat to Dominick Cruz's bantamweight title.

In the main and co-main events, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Frank Mir were both victorious in lopsided affairs. While Jackson stuffed all of Matt Hamill's takedowns and bested the exchanges for a unanimous decision, Mir earned a decision win over Roy Nelson in a lackluster heavyweight tilt.

What's next for the winners?

Here are some interesting fights to make after UFC 130.

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Jon Jones or Mauricio Rua/Forrest Griffin Winner

With all of the injuries and shuffled bouts, the light heavyweight division is in complete chaos.

UFC champion Jon Jones is set to make an earlier than expected octagon return after suffering a hand injury, and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is the only viable contender with an open slot.

An argument could be made for former champion Lyoto Machida, but a win over a 47-year-old Randy Couture hardly constitutes a title shot.

With wins over Machida and Matt Hamill, Jackson is in the best position to challenge for the light heavyweight title.

Machida could still slip into that spot if Jackson's recently announced hand injury proves to be serious. In that scenario, Jackson should face the winner of the August 27 rematch between Rua and Forrest Griffin.

Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira/Brendan Schaub Winner

2 of 5

It was far from pretty, but Frank Mir continued his winning ways at UFC 130 with a victory over Roy "Big Country" Nelson.

With no top-10 heavyweight available to him, Mir's next opponent could be the winner of the Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brendan Schaub bout, which is scheduled for UFC 134.

In times like this, the UFC could really do for some cross-promotional bouts involving the recently acquired Strikeforce brand. While the UFC brandishes a much more talented stable overall, the San Jose based promotion holds its own against the juggernaut in the heavyweight division.

How great would it be to see Mir take on recent Strikeforce Grand Prix castoffs Fedor Emelianenko or Andrei Arlovski?

Rick Story vs. Jake Ellenberger or Nate Marquardt/Anthony Johnson Winner

3 of 5

If Rick Story truly seeks upper-echelon competition, former title contender Josh Koscheck would be the perfect test.

With that said, the UFC needs to take advantage of Story's emergence as a top-10 welterweight.

UFC champion Georges St-Pierre has decimated all comers at the top of the welterweight hierarchy, and a fresh face is welcome in a division held in check by such a dominant champion.

A bout against Jake Ellenberger or the winner of the June 26 tussle between Nate Marquardt and Anthony Johnson could really improve Story's status as a title contender.

Story has proven himself as a legitimate threat at 170-pounds. There's no turning back now.

Brian Stann vs. Demian Maia/Mark Munoz Winner

4 of 5

The ultimate treat for fans would be Brian Stann taking on Wanderlei Silva or Vitor Belfort, but both men are already tied up with summer bouts.

The only logical opponent available for Stann to continue his middleweight climb is the winner of the UFC 131 bout between Demian Maia and Mark Munoz.

As with Rick Story and the welterweight division, Stann has quickly burst onto the scene as a viable threat in the middleweight division. He's also a fresh face in a weight class crippled by Anderson Silva's everlasting reign.

Demetrious Johnson vs. Brian Bowles/Takeya Mizugaki Winner

5 of 5

If the UFC decided to pair Demetrious Johnson with Joseph Benavidez, it would be an instant classic, but is it wise to risk such a fresh contender?

Benavidez has already been defeated by UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz twice, and it'll be a long time before he gets another shot.

A great fight for Johnson would be the winner of Brian Bowles and Takeya Mizugaki (UFC 132). It would go a long way in proving his placement in the bantamweight division and immediately thrusting him into title contention.
