WWE: Power Ranking the Top 21 Wrestlers in WWE
Each and every week, WWE.com ranks the top 25 wrestlers in the company in its "Power 25."
According to the site, "The rankings are based on victories, quality of opponents, momentum and overall in-ring dominance, as well as intangibles."
Well, I'm here to do something similar, with my rankings of the Top 21 wrestlers currently in the company.
The formula for my rankings goes a little something like this: There will be five categories (In-Ring Abilities, Mic Skills, Charisma, Gimmick, Overall), and all 21 wrestlers will be given a score of 1 to 10 in each category, with 10 being the highest. The wrestler with the highest point total will top the rankings.
Alright, now that we've laid out the formula, let's start up what is sure to be a very interesting debate. Here are my rankings of the best there is in the business—at least the WWE's part—today.
21. Sin Cara
1 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 7.5
Sure, Sin Cara has had some noticeable botches early on in his WWE career. But he has a move set that's unlike anyone else's, and he will continue to adapt to the WWE style in time.
Mic Skills: 1
Will he ever actually use the mic? I'm not sure he will.
Charisma: 4
Even though we can't see Sin Cara's face, he uses his hand and body gestures to get the crowd into the match as much as he can.
Gimmick: 5
He's a masked luchador from Mexico, who lets his in-ring work do the talking. It's simple, but effective.
Overall: 6
Given that he's still a WWE rookie, Sin Cara has plenty of time to develop into a star. His unique aerial move set and his connection to the Hispanic audience should help him get to the top.
Total: 23.5/50
20. Kane
2 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 5
Kane isn't horrible for a big man, but he's at the tail end of his career and won't exactly be putting on any five-star matches in the future.
Mic Skills: 7.5
He doesn't get a ton of mic time, but he did during his heel run as World Heavyweight Champion last year. And he was damn good, too.
Charisma: 6
Whether he's face or heel, Kane consistently draws a decent pop for the crowd. He appeals to the audience and has done so throughout most of his career.
Gimmick: 5
Kane's character hasn't been quite as effective since he removed his mask, and you never know when he's going to be face or heel. But he's called "The Big Red Monster," and he is indeed a monster.
Overall: 6
Kane likely doesn't have much time left in this business, but his contributions can't be overlooked. He's been one of the most consistent big men the WWE has ever seen, and he still has a position in the company.
Total: 29.5/50
19. The Big Show
3 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 5
Ric Flair has dubbed The Big Show as "the best big man he's ever worked with." And Show is good for a guy of his size, but he's not going to compare to the smaller, more athletic competitors.
Mic Skills: 6
He's always been able to cut promos, but he's a notch below the top guys in the business in that department.
Charisma: 7
As a heel, The Big Show generates some very good heat from the crowd. As a face, he's equally over. I'd argue that his face character is a bit too corny, but he does a good job selling it to the fans.
Gimmick: 5
What exactly is his gimmick? "The World's Largest Athlete?" I'm gonna need more than that.
Overall: 6.5
Big Show will never be confused for the best wrestler in the world, but he fits his role well. He can help put younger guys over, but still be used as a main eventer if needed.
Total: 29.5/50
18. Drew McIntyre
4 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 6.5
Drew McIntyre hardly gets any TV time—unless you count WWE Superstars—but he's surprisingly quick and athletic for a guy of his size. He reminds me of a young Triple H.
Mic Skills: 6.5
The accent makes it tough to understand everything he says, and again, he doesn't get much mic time. But check out some McIntyre promos on YouTube, and you'll see the guy has some serious potential.
Charisma: 6
McIntyre's been dubbed "The Chosen One" for a reason. Some might say that he's boring, but he's got some very solid facial expressions, shows a mean streak in the ring and plays a very good heel when booked in the right angle.
Gimmick: 5
His "Chosen One" gimmick hasn't really gotten him that far, but it's a solid gimmick to work with. If the creative team ever gets behind it again, then big things could be in store for McIntyre.
Overall: 6.5
He's still only 25 years old and has shown potential in just about every major area of the business. a sustained push is all he needs to be a breakout star in the next year or so.
Total: 30.5/50
17. Daniel Bryan
5 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 10
The best wrestler in the WWE, and maybe the world. Enough said.
Mic Skills: 6
When's the last time Daniel Bryan picked up a microphone and cut a promo? I have no idea, but I do know that this is how good he can be.
Charisma: 4
That finger point Bryan does when he makes his way down the entrance ramp is about as much charisma as we see from him.
Gimmick: 5
Bryan's gimmick essentially a nerdy guy who loves to wrestle. It's not horrible, but it could certainly use some work.
Overall: 7.5
As a wrestling fan, I'm a Daniel Bryan fan as well. He can really go in the ring and is an underrated mic worker.
Total: 32.5/50
16. Zack Ryder
6 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 7
Who remembers when Zack Ryder was in the ECW Championship picture? His matches against Christian were pretty damn good. Just watch this if you don't believe me.
Mic Skills: 7
No lower card worker is going to get promo time, but check out Ryder's YouTube channel and you'll see that the guy definitely knows how to talk.
Charisma: 7
I refer you back to the YouTube channel.
Gimmick: 5
His "Jersey Shore" type gimmick hasn't really gotten off the ground on WWE TV, but it could work if booked right.
Overall: 7
Ryder is a guy who doesn't get much attention from the creative team. Yet, he has a huge following among the Internet Wrestling Community. He's better than anyone in the WWE realizes, and he could be a huge fan favorite if given a chance.
Total: 33/50
15. John Morrison
7 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 9.5
I think we all know that John Morrison can flat-out go in the ring, with his unique parkour style and high-flying ability that are among the best in the business.
Mic Skills: 5.5
As a heel? Go back and look at Morrison's stuff with The Miz, and you'll see that he was certainly above average in that department. As a face? Absolutely terrible.
Charisma: 5
Some wrestlers draw strong reactions from the crowd, and you really have no idea why. Exhibit A: John Morrison.
Gimmick: 6.5
He's booked as an athletic guy whose real life training—parkour—translates to his in-ring success. It may not be great, but you know what? It fits him well.
Overall: 7
Morrison's skills as a wrestler make him a valuable asset to the WWE, but we know WWE wrestlers aren't booked based on their in-ring abilities. He has to step up his game in those other areas.
Total: 33.5/50
14. Rey Mysterio
8 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 9
Much like John Cena, Rey Mysterio's move set is very predictable and redundant. But that doesn't mean he can't wrestle. I think we all know that isn't true.
Mic Skills: 3.5
I can't even take Mysterio serious on the mic. His promos come across as fake and rehearsed, and they are about as exciting as vanilla ice cream.
Charisma: 6
Like him or not, Mysterio draws. Parents love him, kids love him, and he sells a boatload of merchandise.
Gimmick: 9
The ultimate underdog, Mysterio's undersized and kid friendly. And that's one way to become very rich in the PG era.
Overall: 6.5
Even though his gimmick is great for business and he can still go in the ring, Mysterio's not ever going to be confused for the total package. He's too shaky on the mic for that.
Total: 34/50
13. Jack Swagger
9 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 8
Minus The Undertaker, Jack Swagger might be the best big man—in terms of wrestling ability—in the WWE right now. His wrestling background at Oklahoma likely has a lot to do with that.
Mic Skills: 7
Swagger's lisp is a bit of a hitch in the road, but that's gotten better as his WWE career has progressed. And, in turn, we've been able to take him a lot more serious as a mic worker.
Charisma: 7
He's a cocky, arrogant and brash dude, who looks like he's simply being himself out there. Swagger comes across as a natural when there are plenty of wrestlers who don't.
Gimmick: 6
"The All-American American" fits Swagger well, as he obviously plays the role of the perfect American citizen, at least in his eyes.
Overall: 7
It's not everyday that you find a big man who can do a little bit of everything, especially one who can outwrestle most of the WWE roster.
Total: 35/50
12. Wade Barrett
10 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 5.5
I've yet to see a great match from Wade Barrett, and he looks like he's going to kill his opponent whenever he hits his finisher.
Mic Skills: 8.5
Barrett has made it as far as he has—to main event feuds with John Cena and Randy Orton—primarily because of his abilities as a talker. He's really, really good in that department, especially for someone who hasn't been around very long.
Charisma: 8
Mic skills and charisma often go hand-in-hand, and Barrett is a perfect example of that. When he talks, people will listen.
Gimmick: 6
As the leader of the Nexus, Barrrett was a much hotter act than he is as the leader of The Corre. But we've definitely learned that Barrett is a leader, first and foremost, and he plays that role quite effectively.
Overall: 7.5
Barrett is one of the bright young stars the WWE has, and if he can improve in the ring, there's no reason why a World title run shouldn't be in his future.
Total: 35.5/50
11. Dolph Ziggler
11 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 8.5
Dolph Ziggler hasn't been in a boatload of high-profile matches in his WWE career, but he's looked really good when he is. Check out his Royal Rumble match against Edge or his matches with John Cena (from Raw) and Randy Orton (from SmackDown) and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Mic Skills: 5.5
There's a reason why Vickie Guerrero is Ziggler's manager. Still, I've seen far worse mic workers than him.
Charisma: 7
Now that Ziggler's gone brunette and looks like just another guy, his charisma's taken a hit. But as a platinum blonde, he oozed cockiness and was a master at using effective facial expressions.
Gimmick: 7.5
His gimmick relies largely on Vickie, but that's a good thing. Ziggler comes across as the cowardly prick who hides behind his woman and haves her fight his battles for him.
Overall: 7.5
A guy with huge star potential, Ziggler's got all the tools to succeed in this business, although I'm not sure how he'll fare once Vickie leaves his side.
Total: 36/50
10. Kofi Kingston
12 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 8
Here's the thing with Kofi Kingston: He always puts on solid or good matches, but he never really tears the house down. He works really well as the high-energy guy, but I'm not sure he'll ever be much more than that.
Mic Skills: 6.5
Who really knows if Kofi's any good on the mic? He's probably cut about ten total promos in the WWE. But I always look back to his feud with Randy Orton at the end of 2009 as proof of how good he can be.
Charisma: 8
When I went to a Raw taping with my brother who hardly ever watches wrestling, the first thing I remember him saying was, "Man, Kofi really knows how to work the crowd." He's right.
Gimmick: 7.5
He does everything right for a face in the PG era: He wears bright colors, he has the "Boom, Boom, Boom" clap, and he's the master of playing the "babyface in peril" role.
Overall: 6.5
Sure, Kofi's flashy and over with the kids, but there's not enough depth with his character. We need more of a reason to cheer him than "Oh, he seems like a nice guy."
Total: 36.5/50
9. Sheamus
13 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 6.5
When given the right opponent, Sheamus can put on as good a match as any big man in the WWE. His Ladder match with John Morrison at WWE TLC in 2010 is proof positive of that.
Mic Skills: 7.5
I know, I know—the accent makes Sheamus really hard to understand at times. But he doesn't come across as contrived or fake on the mic. When he speaks, he comes across as a real natural.
Charisma: 7.5
I don't look at Sheamus and think that he's just another boring big man. He's incredibly physical, he has great facial expressions, and he shows an intensity that makes fans really dislike the guy.
Gimmick: 8
Straight up, "The Celtic Warrior" is a force in the ring. No one wants to mess with Sheamus, who's so dedicated to his gimmick that he wears sunscreen whenever he goes out in public in order to keep his skin so white.
Overall: 7.5
While some may argue that Sheamus was pushed too fast, the truth is that he took the ball and ran with it. He fits his role as a no-nonsense Irish grappler to a T, and I'd expect him to be in the main event picture for the large portion of his career.
Total: 37/50
8. John Cena
14 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 6
Yeah, the Five Moves of Doom make me cringe, and John Cena uses the same basic "get destroyed the entire match, then magically come back and win" formula to his matches. But he's also a former winner of the Professional Wrestling Illustrated Match of the Year award, and isn't quite as bad in the ring as we all like to think.
Mic Skills: 9.5
Whether he's corny or not, Cena knows how to work the mic. Nothing he says sounds rehearsed or recited, and when he speaks, I believe that he means what he's saying.
Charisma: 10
There's a reason why Cena sells so merchandise and gets such a huge pop from the crowd—he's charismatic. Whatever "it" is, he has it. Few people in wrestling history have held the audience in the palm of their hand like Cena has.
Gimmick: 4
I get it, Cena's gimmick is kid friendly, and he makes a ton of money. But it's also been the same old crap for the last five years or so, and it needs to stop.
Overall: 8
He's the face of the company, and like him or not, you can't deny that Cena is great at what he does. Maybe he's not a phenomenal wrestler, but in a business called "sports entertainment," he knows how to entertain.
Total: 37.5/50
7. R-Truth
15 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 7
R-Truth is a lot like Kofi Kingston. He's a consistently average-to-good performer, but he's never really going to rock the building with his matches. That's OK, though.
Mic Skills: 7.5
When he was a face, Truth nearly put me to sleep when he cut promos or even appeared in backstage skits. But, as a heel, he's been nothing short of phenomenal so far.
Charisma: 8
No matter what role he's playing, the crowd reacts to R-Truth. They cheer him when he's singing his "What's Up?" theme song, and they boo the holy hell out of him when he's running his mouth as a heel.
Gimmick: 10
Truth has gone from boring jobber to main event heel. Why? Because his gimmick has been absolutely amazing.
Overall: 8
A few months ago, I probably would have given Truth about a 4 overall. Amazing how things can change, huh? He's currently the hottest act in the wrestling business.
Total: 40.5/50
6. The Miz
16 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 7
Is The Miz great in the ring? Absolutely not. But he's worked his tail off to improve in that area, and his WWE Championship match with John Morrison on the first Raw of 2011—as well as his US Title matches with Daniel Bryan last year—should let us know that The Miz can hold his own in the ring.
Mic Skills: 9
The Miz is great on the mic, and his speaking skills have a lot to do with his climb to the top of the company. But of all the great speakers in the WWE (Cena, CM Punk, etc.), no one flubs their lines as much as The Miz.
Charisma: 9
When you watch or hear The Miz, you want to scream at him and boo him out of the building. He makes you truly hate him because, quite frankly, he seems like a total d-bag. In actuality, that just means he's really good at his job.
Gimmick: 8
His gimmick relies largely on the "No one ever believed in me, but I've beaten the odds and risen to the top" spiel. It works for him. But we've seen that thousands of times, and I'm not sure that anything The Miz does is all that unique.
Overall: 8
A solid in-ring worker, a heel who's over with the crowd and a truly believable character? Sounds like The Miz has got a lot going for him.
Total: 41/50
5. Cody Rhodes
17 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 8
Cody Rhodes hasn't been in all that many high-profile feuds—ones against Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio being the exception—and as a result, he hasn't had many memorable matches. But, with the little we've seen from him, I think it's pretty clear that Rhodes is a good in-ring worker, with the potential to be great.
Mic Skills: 9
Who knew that the little man from Legacy could talk his way out of a traffic ticket? Seriously, though, the first time I heard Rhodes cut a promo, I thought to myself, "This kid's going to go far." He's really good.
Charisma: 9
As Rhodes has gotten more promo time, I've gotten more impressed with Rhodes. He has absolutely no problem capturing the attention of the audience, and when he does, he keeps it.
Gimmick: 9
Quite simply, Rhodes is a pretty boy, who thinks he's way better looking than anyone on the roster or in the WWE Universe. It's a gimmick we've seen before, but Rhodes has made it his own.
Overall: 8.5
Though he's never even held a singles title in the WWE, Rhodes has all the tools it takes to succeed in this business. If he gets the right push, I'd expect him to be a world champion within the next year or so.
Total: 43.5/50
4. Randy Orton
18 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 9
I've always seem members of the Internet Wrestling Community write that Randy Orton isn't very good in the ring. Really? Go watch his recent matches with Christian then try to tell me that.
Mic Skills: 7
Orton's a bit robotic on the mic, but I honestly think it plays into his gimmick perfectly. He just doesn't seem to give a crap about anyone or anything, and that comes through in his promos.
Charisma: 9
I don't know exactly what it is about Orton that makes the crowd love him so much. But they do. Orton gets a bigger pop than just about anyone in the business.
Gimmick: 9.5
I like to call Orton The Stone Cold of the PG era. Much like Austin, he's the WWE's anti-hero, one who gets showered with cheers despite his very heelish tendencies.
Overall: 9.5
Over the last year or so, Orton has ascended to the very top of the wrestling business. He's a consistently great performer, who can carry a brand—SmackDown—or even an entire company if need be.
Total: 44/50
3. Alberto Del Rio
19 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 8.5
In a relatively short time in the WWE—less than a year—Alberto Del Rio has already proven that he can go in the ring. His matches with Rey Mysterio were always above average, and his match with Christian for the World Heavyweight Championship was even better.
Mic Skills: 9
Much like some other guys on this list, Del Rio's accent makes him a bit hard to understand at times. But the accent doesn't make the man, and ADR is as believable as they come on the microphone.
Charisma: 9.5
Look at that picture—his smile, his scarf, his signature pose. If that doesn't scream charisma, then I don't know what does.
Gimmick: 9.5
Del Rio's been a called a Mexican JBL, and I can see the similarities. But gimmicks are recycled all the time, and Del Rio definitely comes off as a rich, arrogant prick, which is exactly what he's supposed to do.
Overall: 8.5
ADR would probably be rated a bit higher, but he's so new to the WWE that I can't give him as high a grade as some others. The complete body of work simply isn't there yet, though I think we can agree that Del Rio's headed in the right direction.
Total: 45/50
2. Christian
20 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 9.5
If you want to know why so many people have wanted Christian to have a world title reign, then all you have to do is look at what he's done since being given a slot in the main event. He's tore the house down against both Orton and Del Rio.
Mic Skills: 9.5
Christian was great on the mic while tagging with Edge, he was great on the mic while in TNA, and he's been even better since returning to the WWE.
Charisma: 10
They don't call him Captain Charisma for nothing. Christian—whether face or heel—captures the attention of the audience with relative ease, and needless to say, that's a gift that not everyone has.
Gimmick: 9
Sure, Christian has played the "I've been overlooked my entire career" character, but you know what? It works because it's not actually a character. It's true.
Overall: 9.5
Of all the wrestlers who have been given a chance at the main even scene over the past couple of years, no one has performed as well as Christian. He's a veteran guy who's great at just about everything, and not bad at a single thing.
Total: 47.5/50
1. CM Punk
21 of 21
In-Ring Abilities: 9.5
CM Punk is second only to Daniel Bryan in the WWE in terms of wrestling ability, and I'm not sure he's as far behind Bryan as people think.
Mic Skills: 10
Whenever a new WWE film comes out, I find myself wondering why Punk didn't land the lead role. He's so good on the mic, it's ridiculous.
Charisma: 10
Whenever Punk is on WWE programming, I focus, I watch, and I listen. He has this incredible drawing power that I can't even really explain. Maybe it's because he comes across as natural and genuine, or maybe it's because he's such a great talker. Whatever it is, though, Punk is as charismatic as they come.
Gimmick: 10
Whether he's the "Straight Edge Superstar," the leader of the Straight Edge Society or the leader of the new Nexus, Punk knows his role and how to play it. He is the epitome of a great stable leader, and with the way he exudes himself while heading a faction, he comes across as very cult-esque. It's actually kinda scary.
Overall: 10
Punk is the complete package. Enough said.
