UFC 130 Fight Card: Demetrious Johnson and the UFC Bantamweights You Should Know
Demetrious Johnson's name is listed among the best bantamweights in the world.
While Miguel Torres, a former WEC champion, has garnered worldwide recognition, Johnson is still relatively unknown as a top-10 bantamweight.
It's hard enough to follow the long list of fighters in five separate weight classes, but with the addition of the featherweight and bantamweight divisions, many fans are faced with unfamiliar stars.
On Saturday night at UFC 130, Torres and Johnson are set to meet in a bout that could decide the next bantamweight title contender. There has never been a better time to get caught up with the fresh faces in the bantamweight division.
Here are the UFC bantamweights you should know.
Demetrious Johnson
1 of 12
Despite having the stature of a flyweight, Demetrious Johnson has done well against larger opponents in the bantamweight division.
At UFC 126, he showcased the explosiveness of his world class wrestling against legendary Japanese fighter Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto.
A win over Torres at UFC 130 would put Johnson one step closer to title contention.
Miguel Torres
2 of 12
Miguel Torres is one of the most recognizable faces in the bantamweight division.
As WEC champion, he defended his throne three consecutive times before suffering back to back losses to Brian Bowles and Joseph Benavidez. Currently riding a two fight win streak, Torres has re-emerged as a title contender.
Can he rise and reclaim his former glory?
Regardless of the answer to that question, Torres is one of the pioneers of the lighter weight classes, and he can look forward to one day having his named etched in the Hall of Fame.
Scott Jorgensen
3 of 12
After going on a five fight win streak, Scott Jorgensen was knocked off in his bantamweight title bout with Dominick Cruz.
Jorgensen was never able to amount much offense against the well-rounded champion, but he proved his toughness in all five rounds of the grueling championship bout.
He is set to make his UFC debut on June 4 at The Ultimate Fighter 13 Finale.
Takeya Mizugaki
4 of 12
Takeya Mizugaki is a top-tier bantamweight, but he constantly struggles in bouts against his upper-echelon peers.
A pattern seems to be forming. Mizugaki has alternated between wins and losses in his last six bouts, and all of the losses have come to ranked opposition.
He'll get his chance to get over the hump at UFC 132 when he takes on Brian Bowles.
Damacio Page
5 of 12
It wasn't long ago that Damacio Page's name was included in the top-10 rankings, but injuries and a long layoff have hampered his bantamweight climb.
He is coming off two consecutive losses to Demetrious Johnson and Brian Bowles, but improved health and guillotine defense could help Page's placement in the division.
Brad Pickett
6 of 12
Brad Pickett is a name that is often overlooked by even the most diehard MMA fans.
He is the only fighter to ever defeat top-10 bantamweight contender Demetrious Johnson.
After losing to Scott Jorgensen at WEC 50, Pickett missed out on an opportunity to challenge Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title.
He rebounded from the loss in the WEC's swan song against Ivan Menjivar. The UFC has yet to settle on a date for Pickett's octagon debut.
Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto
7 of 12
Along with Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber, most fans credit Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto as one of the first major faces of the lighter weight classes.
He is an MMA legend with over 10 years of experience and a proven résumé. In 18 wins, Yamamoto has earned 13 knockouts.
At UFC 126, he was defeated in his octagon debut against Demetrious Johnson.
Eddie Wineland
8 of 12
Eddie Wineland wasn't too far off from playing spoiler to the UFC 132 main event of Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.
Despite coming in as a major underdog, he gave the "California Kid" all he could handle for three rounds.
Faber walked away the unanimous decision nod in the end, but it was a great showing from the first ever WEC bantamweight champion.
Brian Bowles
9 of 12
Brian Bowles' bantamweight title reign lasted about as long as Vince McMahon's XFL football league.
After upsetting Miguel Torres, Bowles lost the title to Dominick Cruz in March 2010 after suffering a broken hand.
A year later, he made his return at UFC on Versus 3, where he defeated Damacio Page by guillotine choke.
Joseph Benavidez
10 of 12
Joseph Benavidez is in the toughest spot out of any fighter in the 135-pound division.
UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has already defeated him twice, and his best friend and teammate Urijah Faber has dropped weight classes and emerged as the next bantamweight title contender.
Benavidez is unlikely to ever take a fight against Faber, and unless Cruz loses to another bantamweight, "Joe B-Wan Kenobi" could be forced to play gatekeeper until the 125-pound division gets the green light.
Urijah Faber
11 of 12
For many years, Urijah Faber has been considered the poster boy for the lighter weight classes.
The multitude of accolades garnered by the former WEC featherweight champion locks him in as one of MMA's all-time greats.
His UFC debut in March was a monumental moment for the sport. It symbolized the arrival of the lighter weight classes on the big stage.
Faber makes history again in his bantamweight title fight against Dominick Cruz at UFC 132, which will be the first bantamweight bout to ever headline a UFC pay-per-view.
Dominick Cruz
12 of 12
Fans all over the world know Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres, but UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is still an unfamiliar face to some people.
Since losing to Faber in March 2007, Cruz has climbed to the top of the bantamweight division and into the pound-for-pound rankings.
The only loss on his professional record is the loss to Faber, which he'll have the chance avenge in the main event of UFC 132.
