WWE Power Rankings: 20 Most Patriotic Wrestlers in History

Jon SainzMay 20, 2011

A patriot according to the Merriman-Webster online dictionary is "one who loves his or her country and supports its authority and interests."

Wrestlers have all kinds of gimmicks, including patriotic ones.

Whether they are really from the country they say they are or not, some wrestlers have acted very patriotically, showing how proud they are of being from country X and their hate for country Y.

Here is a double ranking of patriotic wrestlers.

It's double because there are a lot of U.S. guys and not many foreign patriots, so I decided to rank them separately.

I will alternate U.S. with World ranks until we reach the No. 1 in each category—this does not mean that the World patriot ranked sixth is more patriotic than the U.S. patriot ranked seventh.

U.S. No. 10: U.S. Title

1 of 20

Country: USA

Even though the champion may not even be from the U.S., the title itself seems patriotic, with the flag always present in every incarnation of the title.

World No. 10: Alberto Del Rio

2 of 20

Country: Mexico

Announced as "the Pride of Mexico" and as an aristocrat/royal family member, he is also proud to be Mexican.

U.S. No. 9: Jack Swagger

3 of 20

Country: USA

The "All-American American." While that makes no sense to me, it sounds patriotic.

World No. 9: Eddie Guerrero

4 of 20

Country: Mexico

Always proud of his Latino heritage, he spoke in Spanish and went by the nickname "Latino Heat," which was also his entrance music for some time.

U.S. No. 8: Dusty Rhodes

5 of 20

Country: USA

"The American Dream."

Son of a plumber, he went on to become World Champion.

What is more patriotic than that in the "land of opportunities?"

World No. 8: Santino Marella

6 of 20

Country: Italy

We all know Santino and his comic roles, but this promo also proves that he's proud to be Italian.

U.S. No. 7: JBL

7 of 20

Country: USA

From redneck to self-made wall street millionaire, Dusty Rhodes may be the one called "the American Dream," but this man also represents it perfectly.

World No. 7: La Resistance

8 of 20

Country: France

Sylvain Grenier, Rob Conway and René Duprée formed a stable based on their common French nationality (they were French Canadians, but who cares?).

Usually coming out to the ring with French flags, they hated the USA for its foreign policy.

This stable kept going for nearly three years before disbanding, winning the Tag Team titles four times and making Duprée the youngest (he was 19 years old at the time) title holder in WWE history.

U.S. No. 6: Kurt Angle

9 of 20

Country: USA

I think winning a gold medal in the Olympics qualifies as patriotic, so he's on the list.

World No. 6: Ludvig Borga

10 of 20

Country: Finland

He was in the WWE for less than two years, but his patriotism is unquestionable as he even had the Finnish national anthem as his entrance music.

His character was that of a foreigner environmentalist who despised the USA for its pollution. He won the IC title from Marty Jannetty and had a feud with Lex Luger.

U.S. No. 5: Lex Luger

11 of 20

Country: USA

"Made in the USA," "The All-American,"—it's hard to go against those nicknames especially considering that he had numerous feuds and matches with foreign patriots (Borga, Yokozuna, etc.).

World No. 5: Brett Hart

12 of 20

Country: Canada

Bret Hart is Canadian and proud of it. Everybody knew it and nobody cared until 1997.

That year he began criticizing the U.S. fans and declaring the superiority of his country. That made U.S. fans hate him, but Canadian and European fans love him more.

U.S. No. 4: Sgt. Slaughter

13 of 20

Country: USA (and others)

Be it pro USA, pro Iraq or pro any other country, this guy has loved every country and acted as a true patriot in all cases, strongly supporting each country and fighting against its enemies.

World No. 4: Yokozuna

14 of 20

Country: Japan

During most of his career, he entered the ring accompanied by Mr. Fuji, who would usually carry and wave a Japanese flag.

He had numerous feuds against pro American wrestlers (Jim Duggan, Lex Luger, etc.).

U.S. No. 3: Hacksaw Jim Duggan

15 of 20

Country: USA

His two best friends are a 2-by-4 and a U.S. flag. The crowd has two chants for him—"heyoooooooooooo," and "USA!"

What more do you want?

World No. 3: Lance Storm

16 of 20

Country: Canada

Formed the Un-Americans with Christian and always went into the ring with a Canadian flag.

U.S. No. 2: Mr. America

17 of 20

Country: USA

The name, the attire, the entrance music—he has it all.

World No. 2: Nikolai Volkoff

18 of 20

Country: USSR (CCCP, Soviet Union)

Always defending his country and going against America, he even sung the national anthem before his matches.

U.S. No. 1: The Patriot

19 of 20

Country: USA

He wore a mask with the american colors and carried the flag out before every match. He also stood up for America and the values it represents.

World No. 1: The Iron Sheik

20 of 20

Country: Iran

A proud Iranian, he represented his country in the 1968 Olympics and continued to do so during his pro wrestling career.
