The 5 Worst Main Events Since UFC 100

Vince CareyMay 7, 2011

Originally this list was supposed to be The Worst Main Events in UFC History, but as soon as I started going back and doing some research I realized that the quality of main events has gotten worse and worse.

To be honest, none of these fights was quite as bad as Arlovski-Sylvia 3 or Shamrock-Severn 2, but the percentage of big fights that are underperforming is astounding.

So before we get into the list, I'm going to ask the million-dollar question: Is MMA less entertaining than it used to be?

5. UFC 114: Rashad Evans vs Rampage Jackson

1 of 5

There wasn't a fight fan alive who wasn't excited for this one.

Unfortunately, most fans also knew what the outcome would be.

After months of trash talk on The Ultimate Fighter 10 and a Twitter war for the ages, Rashad Evans held Rampage Jackson against the cage and worked for takedowns for the majority of this three-round fight.

If it weren't for an early knockdown for Rashad and a late surge by Rampage, this would easily be sitting atop the list.

4. UFC 122: Nate Marquardt vs Yushin Okami

2 of 5

To be fair, Okami has never been the most exciting fighter in the world. However, Marquardt is usually good for a highlight or two.

When Dana White announced that the winner of this fight would earn a shot at the Middleweight title, most fans were surprised since Marquardt was only on a one-fight win streak going into the bout. It ultimately didn't matter, as Okami surprisingly won a decision by out pointing "The Great" on the feet.

The fight was a dud and White openly criticized Marquardt's corner afterwords for telling him he was winning rounds that were obviously going the other way.

3. UFC 105: Randy Couture vs Brandon Vera

3 of 5

The British fans deserved a quality main event after being let down the last two times the UFC showed up, but sadly Couture and Vera disappointed.

There is no denying that Couture came into the fight with the perfect game plan, holding the younger, faster opponent in the clinch and wearing him down, but it lead to a 15-minute snoozefest.

Couture walked away with a victory, and the fans walked away wanting their money back.

2. UFC 112: Anderson Silva vs Demian Maia

4 of 5

It's hard to believe that the pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet ever had a showing like this.

Anderson Silva completely destroyed the inferior Maia for the first two rounds, knocking him down numerous times and refusing to let Maia drag him into a jiu-jitsu battle.

For reasons unknown, Silva decided to make the final three rounds a 15-minute audition for "Dancing With the Stars" and toyed with Maia until the final bell rang.

It was the third underwhelming win in four fights for the middleweight champion and earned him a large amount of criticism from both the fans and UFC President Dana White.

1. UFC 119: Frank Mir vs Mirko Cro Cop

5 of 5

Oddly enough, the only fight on the list that didn't go to a decision is the worst.

For 14 minutes, Mirko Cro Cop and Frank Mir cautiously transitioned from circling each other, throwing half-hearted strikes, to sloppy clinching up against the cage.

Finally, with just 58 seconds left in the fight, Mir landed a knee to the head that put Cro Cop down for good.

As much as I want to cut Cro Cop some slack for taking the fight on short notice, I want my $50 back a little more.

The best part of the entire fight came at the post-fight press conference, where it was revealed that Mir would not receive a knockout of the night bonus, despite having the only knockout on the card.
