WWE Draft 2011 Results: What's Next for Mark Henry After His Move to SmackDown?

Graham GSM MatthewsApr 26, 2011

As tonight's electric and historical WWE Draft 2011 comes to a close, we look back on its impact on the landscape of the WWE roster.

With positives and negatives coming out of the memorable event, one moment specifically that intrigued me was the drafting of Mark Henry back to Friday Night SmackDown.

This pick would come with Randy Orton's victory over RAW's Dolph Ziggler, thus granting the blue brand two draft selections in the process.

Although the revealing would be interrupted by CM Punk, it was later discovered following the commercial break that Sin Cara and Mark Henry would be the lucky ones sent packing to Friday Nights.

Knowing the main Draft is usually for top talent and established main event stars, it confused me a little bit as to why the World's Strongest Man would be included amongst the names of John Cena, Randy Orton and Sin Cara, being the lower-card comedy act that he is.

Later on in the evening, it would be announced by SmackDown General Manager that Mark Henry would join the likes of John Cena and Christian in the main event to battle RAW representatives Alberto Del Rio, CM Punk and WWE Champion The Miz for the final draft pick.

My original assumption was to have a predictable win for RAW, and drafting the immortal Undertaker back to Monday Nights for the first time in nearly a decade.

Although RAW was able to pick up the victory, it was not in the fashion I speculated it to be. With my mind already boggling from the surprising draft pick of John Cena to SmackDown earlier on in the show, I was even more shocked to see Mark Henry turn on his teammates and led Team RAW to emerge victorious.

Since coming to RAW via trade in June 2009, Henry certainly had the potential to become a main event talent for the brand with his actions against Randy Orton, despite his veteran status.

However, he would soon be demoted to nothing more than a comedy joke, wrestling primarily on WWE Superstars and competing in random bouts throughout the past two years.

With Mark Henry heel, this opens up a whole new window of opportunities for the World's Strongest Man, reverting back to the monster heel he once was. Possible rivalries with Randy Orton, Christian and Sin Cara are also in question.

In my opinion, he will be able to do much more as heel. He has stated recently that retirement is imminent, so a push on his way out for the next year or so will help make SmackDown fresh again.

The 2011 WWE Draft was indeed a successful event in my mind, with numerous twist and turns, not including its lackluster ending. With once popular babyfaces R-Truth and Mark Henry turning heel within the same month, one can only hope Hornswoggle is next.

Heres to the fresh match-ups we hope to see following Extreme Rules, providing us with hopefully another strong 2011 year in WWE.

Thanks for reading, Bleachers! Make sure to leave your thoughts below in comments regarding this controversial event with Mark Henry that not many could see coming. GSM out.
