Cam Newton: Top 10 Best Situations for Him To Enter in the NFL

Kyle VassaloApr 20, 2011

Cam Newton is one of the most polarizing figures to enter this year's draft. If a team is able to hone his skills and develop him into even a slightly above average passer, he has the arm and legs to be one of best.

Conversely, many wonder if he is going to be able to make NFL reads and go through his progressions. In order for Newton to succeed, he is going to have to land in the right situation.

This slideshow is comprised of teams who offer a solid foundation around Newton, could need a quarterback in the future and/or have a scheme he would excel in.

10: Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills already have an above average quarterback in Ryan Fitzpatrick. They have far greater areas of need that need to be addressed, but there is a chance Newton is going to take over the NFL and be their franchise quarterback for years to come.

As good as Fitzpatrick is, he is not that. The Bills have one of the better receiving tandems and a solid run game. If you watched the Bills last season, it was not the offense that caused them to fall short in many close games.

Perhaps the addition of Newton would give them a more explosive offense and winning attitude that could make up for their defensive shortcomings.

9: Detroit Lions

Matthew Stafford still has a chance to be a sensational quarterback. He could also be the focal point of one of ESPN's future 30 for 30s entitles What Might Have Been. Only Stafford's doctors know exactly how bad his shoulder injuries are getting.

The Lions are unlikely to cut bait for a few more years, but if they are presented with the opportunity to take Newton they would probably have to think about it.

He would be coming in behind an offensive line that is a few pieces away from being solid and have one of the best receivers in the NFL. A sure handed tight end and developing defense make the Lions a desirable team for any quarterback to be a part of. Hopefully Stafford can stay off the sidelines and make a bigger impact.

8: Seattle Seahawks

Unless the Seahawks pull a Mark Sanchez trade scenario, they have no shot at Newton, but hey, this is all theoretical right? Matt Hasselbeck might have one more injury-prone overpriced year of magic to offer the Seahawks. He may not.

Pete Carroll needs to find his quarterback of the future. In only one short year, the Seahawks overachieved to 7-9 and made some noise in the playoffs by knocking off the defending World Champions. The Seahawks scored in their offseason last year and have a lot of young, emerging superstars in place.

Newton would bring a whole different dynamic to the offense. His home-field advantage would be reminiscent of Auburn's. While some fans may be hesitant upon his arrival, Seahawks fans do a good job of embracing their players.

7: Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals need a quarterback in a major way, seeing as they have the worst situation under center in the entire league. Fortunately, they also have one of the best receivers of the generation in Larry Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald's contract expires next year and the Cardinals need to do everything they can to ensure he doesn't vacate Arizona. A promising young talent like Newton is an automatic upgrade to the position.

They have a couple of talented backs that underachieved last season. It's up to the Cardinals to bring in a quarterback who can make the offense go once more. He doesn't have to be Kurt Warner, but for Cardinals fans who believe John Skelton is the answer, you are mistaken.

6: Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins are not going to be able to get by with Rex Grossman under center. Cam Newton may never be Mike Shanahan's next John Elway, but he is better than what they have going on.

They already brought in a left tackle in Trent Williams and have a few weapons that Newton should be able to utilize. Newton falling into the arms of an offensive genius with a scheme that doesn't falter would be ideal.

5: Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings have everything you would ever want in an offense. The have the best running back in football, an explosive group of receivers and a head coach who can relate to the locker room.

Everyone saw what happened when a dual threat quarterback like Joe Webb entered the offense and Webb is not even close to the football player that Newton is. Newton could step in and make the Vikings the dynamic offense they were in 2009.

4: Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans have kicked Vince Young to the curb and fired Jeff Fisher this offseason. Kenny Britt is having problems with the law and Chris Johnson fell over 1,100 yards short of his ambitious rushing goal.

The Titans need to bring some stability to the locker room. Newton brings many of the same characteristics as Young did when he first arrived. He is a leader and has the ability to run when he needs to. The difference is that Newton is miles ahead of where Young was as a passer.

With CJ2K in the backfield, the Titans are a weapon or two away from being dangerous with Newton under center.

3: Miami Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have the best left tackle in football and a premier NFL receiver in Brandon Marshall. Their backfield will likely be scrapped this offseason and they have no one worth mentioning under center.

The Dolphins need to move forward with a legitimate quarterback. They haven't invested very heavily in a gun slinger since Dan Marino. It's time to bring some of the glory back to Miami.

Newton would enter a situation where he is protected and has someone to throw the ball to. It could be better, certainly, but the Dolphins could start building around Newton immediately.

2: Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders surprised a lot of teams last season. There was a stretch of the season where nobody could contain Darren McFadden and nobody could throw on the Raiders to save their life. They succeeded with the likes of Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski under center.

Newton could come in and start immediately. Some may be thinking Al Davis would be gunshy about bringing in a high profile SEC quarterback with character issues after the Jemarcus Russell debacle, but Newton is different from Russell.

He could come in and make the Raiders one of the fastest offenses in the entire NFL. Their receiving corp is probably the fastest in the league and McFadden is a one man wrecking crew. Add a quarterback who can run and throw to the equation and nobody wants to face the Raiders all of a sudden.

1: San Francisco 49ers

This will be Jim Harbaugh's rookie coaching campaign and he needs to land the quarterback of the future in a major way. He plans on running a modified west coast offense during his reign in San Francisco, a scheme that would adhere to Newton's abilities.

Harbaugh is a quarterback genius and Andrew Luck is a prime example of what an extended amount of time being groomed under Harbaugh can do for a talented quarterback. Newton isn't Luck, but he could succeed in the NFL in similar fashion.

The 49ers have invested three first-round picks along their offensive line and have one of the best tight ends in football. Michael Crabtree has a lot of untapped potential and poor quarterback play has to be somewhat to blame for his relative struggles in the NFL.

With Frank Gore in the backfield, the addition of Newton would help the 49ers edge out at least a few opponents a year. The 49ers have lacked a leader under center since Jeff Garcia left town. It's time to bring in a quarterback who has a voice in the locker room and can command the team. Newton might fit the bill.
