WWE WrestleMania 27 Live Blog: The Rock, John Cena and Full Results From Atlanta

Thomas GaliciaApr 3, 2011

Its that time of year again, Wrestlemania time! This is Bleacher Report Featured Columnist Thomas Galicia here, and while I usually write about the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat and Chicago Cubs, tonight, I get to focus on my second favorite sports event of the year.

For the next four hours, I will be blogging live my thoughts, opinions and the results from this year's Wrestlemania, live from my house, which is at the Home of Wrestlemania 28, Miami, Fl.

Maybe that's a good preview for next year's Wrestlemania, or just me being cheap. Either way, this Wrestlemania looks to, at the very least, be fun, thanks to the inclusion of The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin and being able to see a matchup between Undertaker and Triple H.

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

The Attitude era is back right!

Now, the main event still features John Cena vs. The Miz for the WWE Championship, but expect The Rock to make an appearance based off of the buildup.

Another match I'm looking forward to is between Edge and Alberto Del Rio for the World Heavyweight Championship, which could very well be a great Smackdown passing of the torch match.

It could still be a passing of the torch match even if Edge wins. Edge hasn't exactly had the best luck at Wrestlemania results wise, but has managed to produce many memorable moments. If it's true that this might be Edge's final Wrestlemania, then it would be great if WWE could let him leave a Wrestlemania on top.

Then there's the aforementioned Undertaker vs. Triple H matchup. Will the streak outlive possible politics? Another good question is, will Shawn Michaels somehow make an appearance in this match?

Plenty of questions surround Wrestlemania, so join me and many other WWE fans in this live blog. If you already ordered/found a way to illegally view Wrestlemania, then this would be a great supplement to the action, and if you can't watch tonight's event for any reason, then this will keep you updated on the events as they transpire.

*UPDATE* 7:00pm EST/4:00pm PST

Wrestlemania XXVII from Atlanta begins with Tony Chimmel introducing Keri Hilson, who's kicking things off with America The Beautiful. Hilson's rendition was very beautiful. Now onto scripted violence!

They decide to start the show like a game show, with a "Here's Your Host, The Rock" type of introduction from a game show announcer type. I can't think of the name of the guy who did the intro but if you do know it, please write it in the comment.

The Rock comes out to the Georgia Dome crowd to a much more mild applause than I or any WWE fan expected. If this event were held at Madison Square Garden, you could be sure that the pop would've been enough to register on the Richter's Scale.

As the intro goes on, the crowd gets more animated. The Rock stops, looks around, then smiles. You know what's coming next...

"Finally, The Rock, HAS COME BACK TO ATLANTA!" *Crowd Noise* "And Finally, The Rock, HAS COME BACK TO WRESTLEMANIA!"

After that introduction, The Rock goes on to talk about how this Wrestlemania will be the most electrifying, asking the crowd if they could hear it, if they could see it, and if they could smell it. The crowd then erupts into a "CENA SUCKS" chant, and the Rock begins to cut a promo on John Cena.

While cutting said promo, the crowd then starts a "Fruity Pebbles" chant. Now I'm really wondering who the crowd is going to back in Tonight's WWE Championship match. The Miz has been the most hated heel in WWE since winning Money In The Bank, while The Rock seems to have turned some fans who didn't already hate Cena into Cena haters. Its going to be the weirdest WWE Title match in terms of crowd reaction because it appears the Face that the people want isn't even competing in the title match.

After his promo, The Rock encourages the audience in Atlanta to repeat his catch phrase with him. The crowd goes bonkers, then The Rock walks off.

After an actual video intro, we see shots of the crowd again, along with Michael Cole who I'll be tuning out. And the first match is, wait what? The World Heavyweight Championship match?

Wow, I don't know what to say, but Edge and Alberto Del Rio deserve better than being the first match on the crowd. But you, already knew that. I'll be back with an update after this match.

*UPDATE* 7:35pm EST/4:35pm PST

Despite what I would've done, the World Heavyweight Championship match was first.

And it set the bar high for what should be a great Wrestlemania.

Despite only getting about 25 minutes to show what they could do.

The results was a back and forth match that showed what two wrestlers who know what they're doing can do.

Then at around the 20 minute mark, Edge had Del Rio set up for the Spear. Del Rio then ducked out of it, and Edge was thrown into the turnbuckle by Broadus Clay, all while the referee was very conveniently distracted. When did the WWE start hiring NBA refs?

After that Del Rio set up Edge by a defeat via submission, however Edge got out of Del Rio's move, then put him in a submission move of his own. This lead to a pin attempt that Del Rio kicked out of, while on the outside, Christian attacked Clay, therefore equalizing the matchup for good.

Edge then hit Del Rio up for a spear, and Edge retains the World Heavyweight Championship. He then went on to vandalize Del Rio's Rolls Royce, to the delight of the sold out Georgia Dome crowd.

Match facts: This is Edge's first Wrestlemania victory since Wrestlemania 21 in Chicago over Mick Foley.

This is also the fourth consecutive year that the Royal Rumble winner lost in his title shot, the longest drought for Royal Rumble winners. Prior to 2008, the Royal Rumble winner had won 11 out of 14 World Title matches since the stipulation was put in in 1993. Safe to say that the winner of next year's Royal Rumble winner will walk out of Miami as world champion.

Next match: Rey Mysterio vs. The Formerly Dashing Cody Rhodes. Next update follows that match up.

*UPDATE* 8:09pm EST/5:09 pm PST

Before I comment on the match up between Rey Mysterio and Cody Rhodes, apparently the decided upon Dark Match was the US Title match between Sheamus and Daniel Bryan.

Anyways, onto Cody Rhodes vs. Rey Mysterio.

Cody comes out to the ring concealing his deformed face. Deformed by a mask he purchased from Rip Hamilton. In fact I recognize that mask as the one that Hamilton wore during game five of the 2005 Eastern Conference Finals.

Mysterio comes out dressed in Captain America garb.

The match starts with Rey attacking Cody as he's taking off his jacket. The back and forth action  between the two is exactly that. Just as Cody is able to get some momentum, Rey is able to take it away from him.

As the match continues, Rey is able to kick off Cody's Rip Hamilton match as the crowd seems to be mixed between Mysterio and Georgia native Rhodes. Rey hits Cody with a 619, however Cody is able to avoid the pin. Rey then puts on Cody's mask and uses it as a weapon while wearing it.

However, Cody continues to kick out, as some people in the crowd continue to chant Cody's name.

After a distraction, Cody winds up winning the match by hitting Mysterio with his own knee brace. Then Rhodes hits Mysterio with a cross-rhodes and wins the match. A great and deserved win for Cody actually, and just the right result for this match. You can feel a mask match coming somewhere down the line.

Match facts: This is the first time that Mysterio has lost at Wrestlemania since the Cruiserweight open in 2004. He wound up losing to Chavo Guerrero.

Next we see a video of Snoop Dogg and Teddy Long. The purpose of this vignette, well, I don't know really.

Wait, to see William Regal rap? WHAT?

What was amusing though, seeing Zach Ryder sing Rebecca Black's Friday, followed by Rowdy Roddy Piper hitting him over the head with a coconut. God Bless Piper, but where's the Cornette face when you need it?

It would be perfect for this Hornswoggle freestyle. Please let this be the last of Horny. I mean it.

Next up: The Corre vs. Kane, Big Show, Santino, and Kofi.

As I was looking for the Cornette face picture you see for the reference to the crap you saw with Teddy Long and Snoop Dogg, apparently Corre lost to Kane, Show, Santino and Kofi. Incredible. Considering that Barrett and the rest of the Corre almost single handedly carried Raw all year (when they were the Original Nexus), they deserved better than this.

Next update coming after the next match.

*UPDATE* 8:15pm EST/5:15pm EST

I didn't pay much attention to The Rock's segment with Eve and Mae Young.

Then Stone Cold Came out and I marked out.

Hard to believe that 10 years ago these two met in a classic in Houston. Had Twitter existed back then, no doubt about it, that match would've broken the website by itself.

Its nice to see the two face to face, all that was missing was for "My Way" to come on during the confrontation.

Alas, it was but for a fleeting minute. Just a reminder to us fans of the attitude era of what was. Next comes CM Punk vs. Randy Orton. Two talented performers on their own that could come close to The Rock vs. Stone Cold. But they'll never match it.

Sad but true fact: nobody ever will.

Next update following Punk-Orton. Let's hope Punk gets more than six minutes this year please.

*UPDATE*

Unfortunately a cable issue has lead to me missing half of this Punk/Orton match. This sucks for me because I was looking forward to this one a lot.

I picked up and it was a very slow pace. Both Orton and Punk were on the ground. Punk then tried to set up Orton for the GTS, but Orton was able to reverse it, and then this lead to Orton setting up Punk on the turnbuckle for the superplex from the top rope.

Punk however was able to kick out. After that he left the ring, then knocked Orton down and started working on his injured leg on the ring post.

Orton then started to favor his injured leg as Punk continued to methodically assault Orton. Punk then got Orton into a submission hold as the crowd chanted for Orton. The viper looks to be in a lot of pain.

Orton then gets up and is able to knock Punk down twice. He then gets Punk to the ground a third time and starts attacking him with his fists, followed by a suplex.

Punk is limping considerably as he gets up and sets up Punk for what looks to be a kick to the head. But Punk gets up and starts kicking Orton. Then gets him into the Anaconda Vise. Orton then tries to reverse the move, but it looks like he's going to tap. However instead he rolls to the ropes to make the hold break.

Orton then begins to attack and the action from this match picks up. Now Punk is knocked down, and now here comes a punt to the head right?

No, Orton's plant foot goes out, and Punk capitalizes. Punk slowly gets up, looking like he's about to-

RKO! No, not quite, Punk gets out of it, now both are on the ground, but Punk is showing his evil smile. He slowly approaches Orton, and then...

RKO FROM ORTON.

That's followed by a pin from Orton, who has pulled off the victory.

MATCH FACTS: Orton has now won his last two Wrestlemania matches and three out of his last four. For Punk, this is his 2nd straight loss after winning the MITB twice in a row.

Next Update coming following the next match. Unless its a big deal, I will no longer comment on the vignettes.

*UPDATE* 8:47pm EST/5:47pm PST

After an introduction to this year's Hall of Fame class comes the match that can best be described as, well, what? I'm just not sure. It's Michael Cole vs. Jerry Lawler. Calling the action: CAN YOU DIG IT, SUCKA!

Also calling the action: Good Old JR.

Stop right now, after this match, just send Cole home, let JR take care of the rest of the night, please.

Cole then states, "Can I have your attention please?" This means, time to go to McDonald's, which is exactly what I'm going to do right now. It's only a few minutes away, so I'll be right back.

*UPDATE* 9:03pm EST/6:03pm PST

After a quick visit to the Golden Arches, I come back to see JR being JR, and swagger telling Cole to stand on King's leg.

Let's be real here, who else sees King winning this match with Stone Cold's help, followed by the two sharing a beer together, with Cole getting a couple of stunners for his trouble? This match is almost too sad to watch. I hate writing about it. Screw this, I'll add another update when I'm finished eating or this match ends, which ever comes first. Still on the docket: The Snooki match, Triple-H vs. Taker, and of course, Miz vs. Cena.

*UPDATE* 9:15pm EST/6:15pm PST

I finish eating. The match however is still going. Thankfully we see a Stunner on Swagger, followed by Cole pleading with Stone Cold, then saying "do you know who I am?" Along with JR thouroughly enjoying the moment. Does this mean JR can come back to Raw?

Anyways, while JR is mocking Cole (He's used "vintage" and "and I quote" quite a few times), the action in the ring is now favoring King.

Lawler gets an ankle-lock on Cole, who's tapping, however Stone Cold is prolonging it so that Cole can suffer even more. He finally rings the bell and King ends up winning in his first ever Wrestlemania match.

Swagger then carries Cole out of the ring, followed by Stone Cold breaking out some cold ones to celebrate with the King. Booker T then comes in, then....

SPINAROONIE!!!!

That was worth it! But it got better, as Stone Cold hit Book with a stunner. That takes me back to when the two were fighting in a supermarket.

Of course, the GM had to send an e-mail, and apparently you have to say "and I quote" in order to read it. He announce that Lawler has been disqualified, and that Cole has officially one the match because of Stone Cold. The crowd then starts chanting the synonym for bovine fecal matter. Does this mean we're about to find out the identity of the Raw GM?

Or was it just an excuse for another stunner, this time to Josh Matthews? Its just too bad Stone Cold can't stun a laptop.

Seriously though WWE, end the annonmous GM, announce that Cole had run it the whole time. Do something, because we're sick of ripping of WCW's "Powers That Be" crap.

More updates coming on the way.

*UPDATE* 9:30pm EST/6:30pm PST

It appears that JR IS calling the rest of the event. Perfect. Next match up is Triple-H vs. Undertaker. See a match with those two NEEDS JR on commentary. Cole just doesn't have the chops for it with this gimmick of his.

Now this match I expect to last at least a full hour, with the first half hour just based on the entrances of both of the superstars.

Trips' entrance starts off with bells tolling. At first I thought it was Taker returning to American Badass at first.

A team of guys comes out with shields, followed by a man in a crown. Then Triple-H comes out to the mixed reaction that could be expected since he's Triple-H and fighting the deadman and all.

Taker then comes out to the Johnny Cash song "No Grave Can Hold My Body Down." This match is already giving me goosebumps.

Now 10 years ago these two met at Wrestlemania, and was overshadowed (rightfully so) by Stone Cold vs. The Rock. Now this match is the second to last real match. Will it overshadow Miz-Cena? Count on it. I'll update after this match ends.

*UPDATE* 10:02pm EST/7:02pm PST

This match has been everything you hoped for.

Undertaker with his attacks, Triple H counters, and vice versa.

The pace was slow, as could be expected when two 40-somethings enter into the ring. Yet again, both show how to make it entertaining.

JR and King selling this match well on commentary, but did you expect anything less. I hope Cole is out for the night.

The Spanish announce table is gone. A steel chair has been used. Game hits a pedigree, but Triple H kicks out.

Can you say epic?

That's followed by the last ride by Undertaker on Triple H. Is it over yet?

Not even close.

Now Taker seems to be ready. Looks like its time for the tombstone.

Taker hits it. 1-2-NO!

Triple H kicks out of a tombstone.

Ok honestly, this was predictable. But still fun to watch. Its stealing the show, which was also expected.

Now Taker grabs the steel chair again. Remember, this is a No Hold Barred match. Everything is legal, as JR comments. Does this mean we could see an HBK appearance?

Trips DDT's Taker on the chair. Both men are down, one has to get up and get the cover. The crowd is clapping in unison, as King says "somehow, both men know they have more to go."

Both men are crawling towards the ropes. Now I'm starting to think that maybe Trips will pull it out and end the streak, and Trips gets the pedigree.

Now the cover, 1-2-no!

Again, Taker kicks out. That's the second pedigree. Will there be a third?

Here comes a third pedigree, and the cover...

Taker kicks out again! Three pedigrees!

Its as if there's nothing Triple H can do to win this match.

Again, both men on the ground. Note, Taker still has yet to win at Wrestlemania using his gogoplata submission. Just throwing that out there (written at 9:52.)

Triple H grabs the steel chair and hits Taker. The chair so far has as good a workrate as Triple H and Taker so far tonight.

Triple H continues to hit Taker with the steel chair and is getting plenty of boos. The Undertaker is motionless right now. Triple H, also on the ground but sitting, is telling Taker to stay down as Taker attempts to get up.

Both men are now using the ropes to try and get up. Trips has the steel chair ready, and gets another shot at Undertaker, which JR describes as wicked and vile.

Now Triple H is on his knees at one turnbuckle as Taker attempts to get up, and I'm now really unsure of how this match will end.

Taker is slowly getting up, with Triple H waiting on him to do so, telling him to stay down, "just die, stay down, what's wrong with you" says Triple H, as some in the crowd are yelling "get up taker."

Taker then gets up, Triple H then makes Takers signature throat slash motion, then finishes him with a tombstone, its over right?

1-2-ANOTHER UNDERTAKER KICKOUT!

JR is right, what did we just see? This is incredible. Triple H doing the tombstone was a great wrinkle, and it was even better to see Taker kick out of it.

After the kick out, Triple H recoils across the ring. He can't believe this either. He then goes under the ring, and here comes Sledgie, which is legal by the way.

Triple H then grabs Undertaker to the center of the ring, then Undertaker hits Triple H with the gogoplata. Will this be a tap out? Its right in the center of the ring, Trips is trying to find sledgie.

Trips finds sledgie, then drops it, Taker not letting go, Trips not giving in. As for my heart, its beating very fast. And Triple H has tapped out.

Did that match steal the show? Yes. Taker beats Triple H via submission after taking three pedigrees and a tombstone. Incredible. 19-0. And I'll be right back.

*UPDATE* 10:34pm EST/7:34pm PST

And I'm back. After I submitted this Taker was carried out on a stretcher in the back of a golfcart. I hope he's ok and its nothing that some time off won't solve.

After that came a Wrestlemania promo for next year in Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Expect me there.

Then came a trainwreck. Snooki pins Michelle McCool. Not a good night in the Callaway house. Michelle McCool has to see her husband wheeled out right before her match, then has to job to Snooki.

Now for the build up of the main event, which after Taker-Triple H, I'm having a hard time getting excited about. But props to WWE for using Nas' Hate Me Now on this package.

Miz then comes out along side Alex Riley. Miz walks in with a swagger worthy of his gimmick. Conceited, slow, but letting you know who he is and what he's about. He gets a good ammount of Heat from the Atlanta crowd.

Now here comes John Cena, who has given us some great WM entrances. From the mobsters in Wrestlemania 22, to the Mustang in 23, the clones at Wrestlemania 25, and last year with the Marines saluting him. This year he steals from Blake Griffin's Slam Dunk Contest gimmick and has a Choir accompany his entrance, which starts with a prayer from DMX's album "Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood."

The choir then breaks out into song, followed by John Cena coming out. Good news is he ditched the Barney the Dinosaur look for a Red, White and Blue ensemble. The bad news is he's still wearing jorts.

The crowd's reaction to Cena however is pretty tepid, and Cena is actually getting some heel heat. They want The Rock. When will Rock make his impact?

Should be noted, Cena has yet to lose a one on one match. For Miz, this is only his third Wrestlemania, and only the second time he's fought on the actual PPV.

And the match is underway. I'll be back after the match to wrap this chat up.

*UPDATE* 11:00pm EST/8:00pm PST

I decided to come back to the live blog after Cena went superman on Miz. That usually means its over.

It didn't but I will be writing until the end.

So far no appearances from The Rock just yet, however we've already seen a five-knuckle shuffle and The Miz reverse an AA.

So far this match as had a quick pace to it, as would be expected considering that they only have about 20 minutes.

Cena now has Miz in an STF, could Miz tap out? Not a chance, he grabs a rope. Cena holds on til the count of four.

Miz then hits a skull-crushing finale on Cena, but Cena kicks out.

After Miz attempts another Skull-Crushing Finale, Cena gets out of it, but in the process knocks out the ref. That's followed by an AA, but no ref to count the pin. Could this be when The Rock comes out?

No, instead Alex Riley makes an appearance and hits Cena with the metal briefcase. Miz then attempts to pin Cena just as the ref gets up, but Cena kicks out.

Considering the principles involved, so far this has been a great match.

Now Alex Riley brings the briefcase back and hands it to Miz, who then accidently hits A-Ry with it. Cena then gets an AA on Miz, but Miz kicks out.

Could this match possibly be like Bret Hart-Stone Cold at Wrestlemania 13 with a double turn?

I doubt it, but that would be a great way for this match to end.

Meanwhile, The Miz looks like he's about to just grab the belt and leave, but Cena tracks him down and knocks him over the security wall. And instead we wind up with, are you ready?

A DOUBLE COUNTOUT!

A Draw! This is how you end a Wrestlemania?

No, here comes The Rock. Followed by a message from the Raw GM.

The Rock reads the E-Mail from the Raw GM. But in the middle of it he loudly exclaims:

"IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK!"

The Rock then declares as host that the match must restart, no disqualification, no count-out!

Of course, this doesn't explain who the Raw GM is, other than the fact that The Rock can overrule him.

After the bell rings again, Cena sets Miz up for the AA, however The Rock hits the Rock Bottom on Cena.

The Miz then takes advantage and pins John Cena. Miz retains.

However, The Rock and Miz stare each other down, what's going to happen?

The Rock gets into the ring and starts attacking Miz, followed by, wait, what is this?

THE PEOPLE'S ELBOW!

And so Wrestlemania ends with The Rock asserting his dominance. Cena leaves without the title, and Miz gets attacked as well.

In other words, unless you're a diehard Cena Mark, you got a satisfying ending.

However what should be mentioned is, Undertaker-Triple H stole the show, just like I thought.

Great end to a PPV that didn't dissappoint, but didn't impress much either.

What was more fun though was having the chance to blog about it live and talk to other fans here on Bleacher Report, once again affirming my belief that B/R's Wrestling fans are the smartest of all sports fans on this site.

Thanks to everyone who commented, and I hope you enjoyed the chat and the show as much as I did.
