Come to Think of It...Behind Tony Romo, Cowboys Bury Ghost of Lambeau Field

Bob WarjaSep 21, 2008

It wasn't so much that the Cowboys were the better team coming into Sunday night's matchup against the Green Bay Packers. It was the curse.

Yes, quite surprisingly, the Dallas Cowboys had never won a game at Lambeau Field. Not once. Not with Roger Staubach. Not with Troy Aikman. Until now.

Granted, this was only the sixth meeting between the two teams on Green Bay's home turf. Yet much of the talk all week centered around the inability to win there.

It was Tony Romo who finally led the 'Boys to victory on the Packer's hallowed home ground. And he did it without much help from Terrell Owens, who was double and triple covered most of the night and finished with only two catches for 17 years.

Ah, but that focus on Owens opened things up for others to shine. Marion Barber ran for 142 years. And backup receiver Miles Auston had two big catches for 115 years. Tight End Jason Witten caught seven passes.

In the end, Romo was 17/30 for 260 yards and one TD, one INT, and a fumble. Just good enough to erase the ghosts of years past.

Packers QB Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 39 passes for 290 yards. He spent much of the night on the run—he was sacked five times—and wasn't able to put together consistent scoring drives after standout performances in his first two games this season.

But it was Dallas' rushing game that trumped Green Bay the most. Dallas amassed 217 yards on the ground to only 84 for the Pack. The Cowboys were also better on third down, converting 50 percent of their attempts, while the green and gold converted around 28 percent.

But it was Lambeau itself that the Cowboys had to overcome the most. And they did, winning fairly handily 27-16.

With the win, Dallas moved to 3-0 on the young season, while Green Bay fell to 2-1.

Dallas broke the "curse," leaving Green Bay to say "curses," come to think of it.
