National Signing Day 2011: The Top 10 Prospects Locked Into Their Commitments
With signing day approaching there are sure to be some surprise commitments and even more surprising de-commitments in college football recruiting.
It comes with the territory as these players are just 17-18 year-old teenagers who flip-flop many decisions.
However, there are some prospects who are just stone-cold solid in the pledge to their respective programs and are even helping out by recruiting other top players to join them.
Let's check out the top 10 players who are as committed as committed can be to their future school.
10. Travis Hughes, LB, North Carolina
1 of 10
Hughes is a 6'1", 220-pound linebacker out of Virginia that is firm in his verbal commitment to UNC. He's a rare linebacker who actually excels more in coverage.
Before he even arrives in Chapel Hill, Butch Davis may give him the the Tar Heel recruiter of the year award as he has been openly recruiting others to join him at North Carolina.
He has worked with Marquise Williams on staying in the ear of Savon Huggins, including having a couple pro-UNC conversations with the talented running back during the Under Armour game practices.
9. Kiehl Frazier, QB, Auburn
2 of 10
Frazier is a top-notch quarterback prospect who is solid to the Tigers.
He used his arrival at the Under Armour game workouts to clearly do the bidding of the Tigers' coaching staff, talking Auburn to anyone who had a pulse.
He and Jonathan Rose were pretty successful in their efforts: They talked the top player in Alabama, Brent Calloway, into switching from Alabama to joining them as a Tiger.
A quarterback who can recruit? Sounds like Frazier has the leadership skills that a team covets out of its signal-caller.
8. James Wilder Jr., RB/LB, Florida State
3 of 10
Wilder was recruited by every big-name program in the country—from Georgia to Tennessee, and LSU to Florida.
Yet the running back/linebacker decided to take his 6'2", 220-pound freakish talents to Tallahassee and join Florida State.
As much as Tony Steward likes Ernie Sims, it's Wilder who reminds us the most of the former FSU standout linebacker.
Both players were equally dangerous at linebacker and running back coming out of high school and dominated their competition. Wilder has been in the ear of many top uncommitted recruits including Steward and Jadeveon Clowney, the top prospect in the country.
7. Jonathan Rose, DB, Auburn
4 of 10
Auburn has used a strong 2010 recruiting class, a magical 2010 season, SEC title and national championship title to vault itself as a force on the recruiting trail.
Gene Chizik and his staff have a very good chance of landing a top-five recruiting class for the second year in a row.
They are in the running for talented players like Isaiah Crowell, Gabe Wright and Cyrus Kouandjio. They also got a huge commitment from the top right tackle/guard prospect in the nation, Christian Westerman today.
Jonathan Rose has been instrumental in the Tigers' being major players on the trail, as the big-time defensive back prospect has been very open in lending a hand to help teach uncommitted players the War Eagle chant.
6. Steve Edmond, LB, Texas
5 of 10
Edmond is a 6'3", 225-pound linebacker prospect who could remind Longhorn fans of Sergio Kindle. He can track ball carriers versus the run and then put his hand in the dirt and rush off the edge on third downs.
He was personally recruited by former Texas defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp, who has since left to become Florida's new head coach. Muschamp likely didn't lobby too hard for Edmond to change his mind, yet one has to think he checked the linebacker's temperature on the prospects of coming to The Swamp.
Edmond is a Texas man through and through and has remained solid about going to Austin since he committed.
5. Braxton Miller, QB, Ohio State
6 of 10
Miller may be the most important recruit not only in Ohio State's class, but in any other class.
He could be poised to start and shoulder the load for the first five games of the 2011 Buckeye season, serving as Terrelle Pryor's alternative.
Another reason for why he is such big get for Ohio State is because he continues the mantra of "if you're a top player from Ohio, you go to Ohio State."
Miller is a legend in the state and playing for Ohio State is a childhood dream. Jim Tressel probably is expecting his signed letter of intent to be the first fax he gets at midnight on NSD.
4. Jay Rome, TE, Georgia
7 of 10
Well, Rome finally made it official last night by committing to Georgia.
His decision was not a shock, as he even went on record in recent weeks saying he was "90 percent Georgia."
He took visits to Alabama and Clemson among other schools, but the 6'5", 255-pound dynamic tight end is solid as a Dawg.
Rome's been a Bulldog lean and pretty much a lock since his recruitment began.
He loves the idea of staying home, being part of the Georgia recruiting Dream Team and forming a tough tight end duo with Orson Charles in Athens.
Rome even had a message for Isaiah Crowell and Ray Drew during his press conference, "Gotta come be a Dawg baby!"
3. George Farmer, WR, USC
8 of 10
Farmer is the top receiver prospect in the country and he hails from a USC pipeline high school in Gardena Serra (CA).
At 6'2" and 200 pounds, there are some whispers that Farmer is actually better than current USC receiver and Freshman All-American Robert Woods—Farmer's former teammate at Serra.
What was so puzzling with Farmer's recruitment was that he took his time in pledging to USC, thoroughly weighing his options to ensure USC was the indeed best place for him.
Since then, he has been committed to USC and truly looks forward to playing with Woods again and catching passes from Matt Barkley.
Farmer is also working on current teammate and stud safety prospect Marqise Lee to join him in Troy.
2. Malcolm Brown, RB, Texas
9 of 10
Besides the anomaly of Christian Westerman's de-commitment, you usually don't see a Longhorn pledge de-commit.
Brown fits that pattern perfectly. He's been pretty silent since his verbal to Texas as many rival coaches and fans know when Mack Brown secures a player, it's over.
Brown is the top running back in the country and should make an immediate impact his freshman year in Austin.
He hasn't really had to help in the recruiting process, as the Longhorns are just about done with stocking this year's recruiting class.
1. Karlos Williams, S, Florida State
10 of 10
When you shoot a quick TV segment on ESPN that disses Nick Saban and Alabama in turn for Florida State, that clearly has you take the top spot in our locked-in commitments rundown.
During the Under Armour All-America Game, Karlos Williams had a quick segment that detailed how Nick Saban told him, "Who you would you rather play for, a national champion like Alabama, or...Florida State?"
The 5-star safety then went on to reveal his desire to one day meet Alabama on the field, and during pregame he would go up to Nick Saban in his Seminole uniform and ask him, "how you like me now?"
Williams also has been recruiting many players to join him in Tallahassee along with James Wilder Jr. The pair have spoken to Nick O'Leary, Jacoby Brissett, Jadeveon Clowney and Tony Steward, among others.
