Dallas Vs Philly: A Game For The Season
There isn't much that can be added to the items of discussion on what the Eagles need to do to win on Monday Night next week. The professionals have pretty much said it all. But I do believe there are a few items worthy of discussion which should have an impact, not only in the game, but for the Eagles' season in general.
First, this game is NOT a must win from a fan's perspective. Obviously, EVERY game is needed, especially games in the division. And winning a division game, particularly against a highly ranked division opponent, early in the season can set a tone for the season. But, as a fan, it is not one which should be taken too seriously. It's early and teams are still shaking rust from their fenders. There's alot that can happen as the season progresses, and Dallas has shown over the last 2 years that they have a tendency to fade late in the season. Philadelphia could set themselves up well with a win, but there is a whole season ahead. It's important the players push themselves to a win, but not at all costs. Better to lose a close game and be healthy than to win and lose key players.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Second, the Eagles MUST establish the run. Against the Rams, they had the opportunity to air it out, and well they did. But Dallas' Defensive Backs are much better than St. Louis'. The Eagles need to pull them in tight, get them concerned about the Eagles controlling the clock, and then McNabb and company can pass with abandon. Last year, in a horrid performance against the Giants in Week 4, the Eagles ran Corell Buckhalter and he was averaging 7 yards per carry through the first quarter. McNabb was ineffective passing. Rather than stick with what worked, while the Eagles were controlling the clock, they turned to the pass and gave up 12 sacks. It's unlikely a similar situation will develop if the Eagles pass early, it's best to take advantage of what's working. Too often, the Eagles abandon the run early. I would prefer to see them come out and run 3 times and go out for the first 2 possessions and burn 2 1/2 minutes or so each time than to see them throw 6 passes and burn 1 1/2. Obviously, this assumes that Dallas doesn't build a 14 point lead early, but the point is made.
Third, when passing, spread it around. The Eagles' effectiveness with the pass is intertwined with getting more receivers involved. Even if they don't catch the ball, the defense will realize they can't focus on one player. Without Brown or Curtis, this is essential. There has to be an element of surprise built into the passing game, and while McNabb's legs can always keep it interesting, the biggest surprise is always playing "who is likely to get the ball?" and not giving the opponent an obvious answer.
Finally, Hank Baskett. Why he doesn't get involved more? Speed, size, and good hands. He showed his importance with one catch for 90 yards Sunday. While he is not Randy Moss, he can be a poor man's Randy Moss....take advantage! He can go high, he can play the jump ball. Let's see it!
I would spend more time discussing the defense and what they need to do, but this is obvious to anyone who knows both teams. I believe the Eagles will likely come out with a Nickel package and try to get alot of pressure on Romo. Better to have him throw to Witten than Owens. Hopefully, Samuel will show why he was brought to Philly with a performance worthy of primetime. In the end, defense is what will determine the winner of this game. Whose can go the distance and make a difference?
In the end, the injuries suffered by the Eagles will payoff. Forcing the other receivers to play larger roles will become important late in the season. Having 6-7 potential weapons is just as good as having one big weapon. In fact, it may be preferable because it allows for more interchangeable parts.
I don't prognosticate publicly, so I won't make a guess as to who will win. But in my heart I know who I want to win. I am hoping this is the year my team finally breaks through.
