Five-Star Detroit-Native William Campbell De-commits from Michigan

Ryan JelleySep 6, 2008

On Sunday, Michigan Wolverines fans received some good news when Quarterback Tate Forcier committed to the Wolverines, but on Friday there was much different news.

Detroit Cass Tech's William Campbell was Michigan's first and most coveted commitment of the 2009 class. Sadly, he is a commitment no more.

On Friday night, after Tech's 21-7 win over Detroit Pershing, he announced that he will be opening up his recruitment.

"I'm not [committed] anymore. I'm going to go ahead and de-commit right now," Campbell told rivals.com. "Most likely, I'm still going to go back to Michigan. I just want to see what else is out there. Me and my mom were talking and decided to see what else is out there for us."

"I'm going to look at other schools and see what else is out there."

Campbell continued to explain his reasoning by saying, "It didn't have anything to do with the [Utah] game Saturday. It was just me and my mom talking and we were going over things. We just decided to see what else was out there and see what other options I've got."

Campbell was always certain that he would still be taking officials to other schools but always stated that he was solidly committed to Michigan.

Only one official visit has been set and that is a trip to Miami. The other three are yet to be set, but Michigan will be one of them he explained.

"I'm going to try to go up there [to Michigan] as much as I can," he said. "I'm going to stay home because my parents can't get all the way out there, but I'm open right now."

With all other schools on equal ground with the Wolverines, he continued to explain what he is searching for in a team.

"I want to play for a national championship," he stated. "So I'll see what team can get me there. See what team gets defensive linemen in the NFL."

The 6-foot-5, 317-pound beast is the No. 17-ranked player in the nation by rivals.com and the No. 3 defensive tackle. The good news is that Michigan is still in the mix and his former teammate freshman Boubacar Cissoko is already playing for the Wolverines.
