Come to Think of it...Bad News Cubs, Bad News Bears

Bob WarjaAug 31, 2008

It's the tale of one city, but of two teams. A tale of woe, actually.

One team is thought to be cursed, the other you may want to curse at this season.

Their immediate fortunes aside, both teams share a penchant for bad news lately.

The Bears, already thin on the offensive line, have lost their first round draft pick to injury, Chris Williams, for at least half the season, if not longer.

And once again, they have no quarterback. Not literally, of course, as Kyle Orton has been selected to be the guy most likely to need extra medical insurance as the starting punching bag behind that porous offensive line.

Cedric Benson is a bust. They have no wide receivers. Even their vaunted defense is under fire this preseason. It's hard to believe the Bears are only two seasons removed from a Super Bowl appearance.

The Cubs, on the other hand, are entering the stretch run of what has been a fantastic season thus far. Yet they, too, have received some bad news lately.

Both Carlos Zambrano and Rich Harden are experiencing arm troubles. Don't want to say 'I told you so,' but you could see that Big Z hasn't been right all month.

And they are coming off consecutive losses at home to the Philadelphia Phillies. Normally, that in itself wouldn't be cause for concern, but those darn Milwaukee Brewers refuse to go away. Following another brilliant performance from CC Sabathia on Sunday, they are within four and one half games of the Cubs.

Milwaukee wisely went after a pitcher with a healthy track record in Sabathia, unlike the Cubs, who rolled the dice on a guy who is lights out when healthy, but always ends up disabled. And CC has been nothing short of amazing since arriving from the mistake by the lake.

Well, as they say, bad news travels fast. Personally, I'd rather experience some quiet for awhile. Come to think of it, sometimes no news is good news.
