South Africa 83 All Out: England Cruise to Big Win

Andrew McNairAug 26, 2008

How do I start this off without saying WOW?

I couldn't believe what I was reading last night as I read the match report from Trent Bridge.

South Africa capitulated!

The so-called best one-day side in the world had absolutely no answer for England as Kevin Pieterson's side continue to raise quite a few eyebrows.

One thing does bother me about this match: Graeme Smith won the toss, how did he get it so wrong? In my time working at St. George's, I saw him get it wrong—but this a bit beyond getting it wrong.

This was embarrassing.

23 overs into the match and South Africa were all out for 83 in a quite abysmal performance from a world class team.

The Proteas top-scored through Andre Nel. The fast bowler slogged 13 runs and I'd love to say it added an air to respectability to the score, but it clearly didn't.

England's hero of the day was Stuart Broad, who finished with career best figures of 5/23. The young paceman struggled in the first match at Headingley, where he was hit for 61 runs, and to come back as strongly in his next match shows real character.

Four wickets in 16 balls just shows class.

Old boys Freddie Flintoff (3/29) and Steve Harmison (2/4) finished off the Proteas.

South Africa were never going to bowl England out and didn't even get a wicket as Matty Prior (45) and Ian Bell (28) coasted to victory in the 15th over.

It was an especially happy day for Prior, who became only the 4th Wicket keeper in history to claim 6 catches in an ODI innings.

If I'm honest, I was expecting a South African backlash at Trent Bridge, but that clearly wasn't the case and Kevin Pieterson's new regime are proving to be tough opposition.

England have been known as a test side for years now, but with performances like this, Pietersen's men can fast become a feared one day unit.

I'm totally intrigued by this series now and I can't wait for the third ODI and no, I'll not be predicting anything!

One more win will do it for England in this five-match series.
