Dwight Howard: Is 'Fast Don't Lie' Worst Sports Commercial Ever Made?

Adam LazarusOct 29, 2010

Worst Sports Commercial Ever Made.

To earn that tile you've got to really want it. It takes a lot of effort to have a terrible sports commercial. A lot must go right (or more accurately, wrong).

Several factors can contribute:

-awful acting from the athlete

-stupid pairing of athlete and product

-stupid pairing of athlete with another athlete

-attempt at humor or seriousness gone horribly awry

Inside are just a few cases of these grossly misguided product-endorsement spots.

No. 10: Fred McGriff's Tom Emanski Video Cameo

1 of 10

I was unable to find the video online so if you can, post it on the bottom of the slideshow.

But for anyone who has actually seen the commercial, you don't really need to be reminded of the unintentional hilarity of this one.

The ad featuring the "Major League Super Star" ran on air for years and was so low-budget it was actually campy.

No. 9: Shaq and Ben Stein For Comcast

2 of 10

Shaq and Ben Stein go together about as well as Shaq and silky smooth free-throw shooting technique.

More to the point, what does Ben Stein OR Shaq have to do with cable television? Icy Hot makes more sense for both the NBA veteran and the 65-year-old former game show host.

But when they started the follow up adds, with the two of them on horses riding through the old West...that made them just plain stupid.

No. 8: Danica Patrick and GoDaddy.com

3 of 10

Whichever side your on—she's hot, she's notthe commercials were pretty annoying. The sex appeal is all that saved them from being unwatchable.

Still, Danica's "acting" leaves something to be desired.

No. 7: Tiger Woods Ruins Caddyshack

4 of 10

Taking history's greatest golfer and inserting him into a remake of history's greatest golf move was a great concept. But it just failed.

For one, Tiger Woods as Carl Spackler? Could they have cast that one any worse? Bill Murray's Carl Spackler was a dirt poor unrefined slob who only lusted after women from a far. Tiger: kinda the complete opposite in every way.

Tiger tried to be funny, but couldn't deliver the lines.

No. 6: Peyton Manning and Justin Timberlake For Sony

5 of 10

The earlier Sony commercials with some combination of Peyton Manning, Justin Timberlake, Erin Andrews, James Brown, Dale Earnhart and/or the San Diego Chicken were funny.

Peyton playing JT in ping pong, or Peyton holding back the ready-to-fight San Diego Chicken were great. (And if you watch football on Sunday on Fox or CBS you see these commercials every 10 minutes).

But the newest onewhich is fed to us on a steady basis during Sundays from 1 pm to 7 pm, as much as 60 minutes previews or what's next on American Dad and the Cleveland Show—is lame.

To advertise 3D sports they should show sports.

No. 5: Dan Marino, Lawrence Taylor, Mike Golic, And Don Shula For Nutrisystem

6 of 10

You don't need to see the video for this one. If you enjoyed watching football in the 1980s, it's too painful.

Marino and LT were two of the three or four greatest players of the decade. Shula was a coaching legend already by that time. And Mike Golic was a member of those great Eagles defenses of the later 1980s. (But forget Golic, because he had already been mocking himself for his weight for years on his ESPN radio show)

Seeing LT and Marino—once the model of athletic prowesslooking fat and old was sad, whether they lost the weight or not.

No. 4: Charles Barkley Is Not A Role Model

7 of 10

Shoe commercials shouldn't be serious (see No. 2 on this list as well).

Charles Barkley has every right to make a statement about what he believes. But to do so in a Nike advertisement—which he receives literally millions of dollars forjust seems an uneasy mix.

No. 3: Tiger's Dad Speaks To Him From Beyond The Grave

8 of 10

Give Nike and Tiger credit for addressing the enormous elephant in the room, the sex scandals.

But having his dad indirectly criticize him for cheating on his wife, when (it appears) he's really talking about his golf game is a cheap trick that didn't go over.

Saturday Night Live said it best with this parody:

No. 2: LeBron Makes Another Bad Decision

9 of 10

Nike and its other top star didn't learn their lesson from Tiger and Earl Woods commercial.

He sort of gives everyone an F-you in this one.

Ripping/mocking/parodying Charles Barkley was fine....and funny.

But if he has the right to do whatever he wants, then so do we, and that includes criticizing him for "The Decision."

No 1: Joe Namath Wears Pantyhose

10 of 10

Forget what he said to Suzy Kolber 30 years later. This was 10 times worse.

Namath was the tough quarterback from steel-town Pittsburgh (Beaver Fall, actually), who played through terrible knee injuries at Alabama and with the Jets. This commercial says otherwise.

A guy who guarantees a win in the Super Bowl when his team is 18-point underdogs has to do a lot worse to ruin his legacy.

But this was not ok, even for the David Bowie Ziggy Stardust 1970s.
