NBA: Why LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh Should Be Panicking Early

Zachary CohenOct 27, 2010

Well you lost your first game, Miami. Boo hoo. Your dreams of going 82-0 were squashed immediately when your team came out flat against Boston. After the game LeBron insisted that it's a work in progress and that everything was going to be alright. The thing is, the game proved almost all of the doubts about the Heat correct.

This team will probably do great in the regular season. They will probably destroy the bad teams of the NBA and win most of their games against the above average to good teams. Where they will struggle is against the top tier of the NBA.

Can this team beat the best?

Before the season started, people questioned this team's ability to move the ball and co-exist on the court. They also looked to interior defense as a question mark. Boston exploited both of these things on Tuesday night to a point that I couldn't even see room for improvement.

The Heat were dominated by Shaquille O'Neal (an old center who is many years out of his prime) and Glen Davis (a backup big man who is talented but not enough to make a team look that bad). Chris Bosh and Joel Anthony didn't stand a chance against two bigs who, quite frankly, aren't that good. Can you imagine what the Lakers would do to this team?

Ball movement was also terrible. As a former basketball player who wasn't athletic at all, I was a student of the game and got by on basketball IQ and overall knowledge of the game. And I guarantee for those like me who understand good basketball, watching the Heat was just disgusting.

All the talk about how they are going to put aside their star power and play as a team was complete B.S. if you judge their remarks just on game 1. LeBron would get the ball, look around and take an off balance jump shot (which, in fairness to him, he was hitting).

Wade seemed angry all game and in my honest opinion it was because he was being out shined by a teammate for the first time since...ever. Bosh was, well, the third wheel. He looked out of place on the court with the rest of the team.

The fact was that in this game you weren't expecting the final result from the Heat because they are obviously a new team and need to gain some experience playing with each other, but it overall just didn't show any promise. The ball was never moved around. The role players seem intimidated by being on the court with three superstars and the superstars don't seem to trust the role players.

Is it possible that LeBron just can't play on a team where he isn't dominating the ball and looking after his own statistics? Yes he went to Miami with the intentions of winning championships, but it could be possible that his skill and basketball playing style don't match what his mind wants him to do.

Bottom line: this team better improve on some of the simple things such as passing and trusting each other. They could also be a piece away from being the team people expected them to be (maybe a defensive presence at the PF or C position...Erick Dampier?). I'm not doubting this team will be good, but they are not a championship team as of now, and if they don't start doing some of the things that I mentioned, "The Decision" could be proven wrong very, very early.
