International Olympic Committee To FIFA: Clean Up Your Act
The International Olympic Committee or the IOC has told FIFA that it has to undergo major changes in order to clean football of corruption in all spheres. The comments were made in light of the recent vote buying scandal that has affected the bids for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Jacques Rogge, the IOC President, also declared that he has been having talks with FIFA President Sepp Blatter about the scandal by telephone. He made these declarations while attending an IOC Board Reunion in Acapulco, Mexico.
In response to questions, Mr. Rogge said that FIFA can learn from the experience of the IOC when it was affected by scandals during its recent bids. He also recognized that while reforms would be made to reduce corruption or irregularities, such corruption would not go away completely because of "human nature."
In a separate statement, FIFA announced that it is going to crack down on unethical behavior and announced that it will have a zero tolerance policy towards such behavior.
As for recent scandal, the Chief of Portugal's Football Federation, Gilberto Madail, denied accusations of collusion with Qatar or any nation for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He made the declarations in an interview with the Lusa News Agency in his country.
The scandal pool also continues to widen as Russia and England engage in a war of words for their respective bids. Alexei Sorokin, head of the 2018 Russian FIFA World Cup bid, made comments about the high crime rate in London in an interview with a Russian sports magazine.
Mr. Sorokin also accused Manchester United Fans of "inciting ethnic hatred with their supporters burning an American Flag."
The Mayor Of London Boris Johnson has asked for a public apology from Russia. Russia apologized within 24 hours but the English 2018 FIFA World Cup Bid Committee has lodged a complaint against Russia.
It appears that the mess is not going to go away and things may go from bad to worse before there is any light at the end of the tunnel.
