Possible New and Comeback Players With New Coach De La Torre

Roberto MaciasOct 19, 2010

With Manuel "chepo" De La Torre now as new coach for Mexico, many are speculating at not only the return of former Mexican players, but also new players that have been under the management of De La Torre. Here is a list of some of the names being tossed around by the media and fans as first time, or returning, players to make a future National Team Squad.

Nestor Calderon

A young player that in recent years has made a name for himself in the Mexican League, Calderon has been a constant player for Toluca. A couple of seasons ago Calderon was being linked with EPL team Sunderland. Since then his level has been on and off, but he has kept constant as a starter with Toluca. De La Torre knows him well, and he is a possible future call up for "El Tri."

Patricio Araujo

"El Pato," as he is known to fans and media, was a strong constant player with Chivas while De La Torre was coach for Guadalajara. A young player and captain of the Mexican National Team that won the Sub-17 World Cup, Araujo has the capabilities for a shot at the National Team. A strong player that does the "dirty" work on the field, Araujo has performed well in past seasons. He has been called before, but not with the consistency of other players. With De La Torre as DT, that might change in the near future.

Gonzalo Pineda

Making a strong duo with Patricio Araujo in Chivas, Gonzalo Pineda was a key figure for De La Torre in Guadalajara. Starting his career with UNAM, Gonzalo Pineda made his switch over to Guadalajara. With UNAM he won two Championships, and one with Chivas. With both teams he was a key player and a valuable asset to coaches. For a couple years he was a constant player for the Mexican National team, playing with Mexico in the 2005 Confederations Cup and in the 2006 World Cup. Pineda might be in a slump in his career, currently playing for Cruz Azul, but a possible boost in his level might get the confidence of De La Torre to bring him back.

Alfredo Talavera

4 of 8

De La Torre has coached Talavera for a good amount of years already. For many years Talavera was the second goalie for Chivas, falling behind Oswaldo Sanchez. A great goalie who lacked constant playing time, Talavera left Guadalajara in 2008 to join Tigres. After a failed attempt to get playing time, he then joined Toluca, with De La Torre as coach. After a serious injury to starting goalie Hernan Christante, Alfredo Talavera got his big break and took advantage of it. Now a constant goalie with Toluca, many have requested for Talavera to get a shot in the National Team. With De La Torre as DT, there is a higher possibility this might happen.

Hector Reynoso

Hector Reynoso has been one of the most constant players for Guadalajara. Currently on his 20th season, some may wonder why Reynoso hasn't been given a shot with "El Tri." De La Torre knows him well and knows his playing style. De La Torre kept Reynoso as one of the most important defensive players on his team during his coaching days with Chivas. With Chepo as DT, will this finally be the opportunity Hector Reynoso was waiting for?

Oswaldo Sanchez

6 of 8

The captain of the Championship team in 2006 with Guadalajara, Oswaldo has already left his mark with the National Team. One of the most praised goalkeepers in Mexican soccer, Oswaldo Sanchez has never put his arms down for a possible come back with Mexico. Currently, the position of goalkeeper with Mexico has been a big question mark. Guillermo Ochoa lately has been prone to mistakes that have cost him and Mexico severely. Many asked for a Oswaldo Sanchez return before this years World Cup as a starter for the Mexican National team, but he was never considered a serious candidate. Now with De La Torre, many question the possibility of his return to the Mexican National Team.

Alberto Medina

7 of 8

A constant player with Guadalajara before, during and after De La Torre's time with Chivas, Alberto Medina has been a player who has the qualities to play constantly for the National Team. Medina has had call ups with the National Team in past years, even making the final squad list for this years 2010 World Cup, but he was not one of the players that received playing time. With De La Torre as coach, Alberto Medina was a constant starter with the team. If Medina regains his usual level, he might be a strong candidate to make a comeback with the Mexican National Team.

Antonio Naelson

Many have wondered why Zinha has not been a constant player with Mexico. A versatile player, who is considered a play maker, Zinha is a very strong candidate to return to the national team with De La Torre in charge. Many considered Zinha as the player the National Team desperately need, while many oppose of call up. This is possibly because of his nationality, being a Brazilian born player who later gained Mexican citizenship. Many fans expect Zinha to be one of the players to make a comeback to "El Tri" under De La Torre, and many believe that it will be well deserved.
