UFC 121: 5 Questions Heading Into Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez

Andrew GladstoneOct 19, 2010

UFC 121 will take place on Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.

In the main event will be none other than UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) against Cain Velasquez (8-0) for the heavyweight championship.

Velasquez not only will be getting a shot to win the UFC heavyweight title, he also has an opportunity to make history in being the first Mexican heavyweight champion in all of combat sports.

As for Lesnar, he will fight to continue his legacy as a dominant force in the world of mixed martial arts and look to prove the doubters wrong.

These are the five questions heading into Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez.

Can Cain Velasquez Stop Brock Lesnar's Takedowns?

Brock Lesnar is a former two-time national champion wrestler, and will have a tremendous advantage in size.

Lesnar is an incredibly explosive athlete that moves tremendously well for someone his size and so far, only Shane Carwin has really been able to stuff any of Brock's takedowns.

Velasquez is a former two-time All-American wrestler. He has supposedly been training with guys Brock's size and has former Olympian Daniel Cormier to help coach his wrestling.

But will Velasquez be prepared enough to stop Lesnar's takedowns?

Lesnar was dominated on the feet by Shane Carwin in the first round of their fight at UFC 116.

At one point in the fight, Lesnar turned his back and tried to run away from the onslaught of punches.

While Velasquez may not possess one-punch knockout power, Velasquez has showed in the Nogueira fight that he has much cleaner boxing technique than Carwin.

How Well can Cain Velasquez Fight off His Back?

In every one of Cain Velasquez's fights, he has gotten on top of his opponent with either great takedowns or landing solid strikes.

But we have never seen Velasquez's guard, and deal with someone the size of Lesnar on top of him.

I believe, at some point, Velasquez will have to fight off his back, and on Saturday we'll just have to find out how good his guard really is.

Can Brock Lesnar Go All 5 Rounds?

The only time we've seen the UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar go the distance was against Heath Herring, and that was a three-round fight.

Lesnar dominated that fight, but Herring was obviously no match for Lesnar, as it was incredibly one-sided.

Velasquez will give a much tougher fight than Herring did, and is known for putting up a fast-paced fight.

One way or another, Lesnar's cardio will more than likely be tested come Saturday.

Will Cain Velasquez Become the 1st-Ever Mexican Heavyweight Champion?

Cain Velasquez has a giant task ahead of him with facing Brock Lesnar.

I believe the gameplan of Velasquez will be to utilize tremendous footwork, complimented with his speed, to try and keep the fight standing as long as possible and scramble out of any bad positions.

But Lesnar has a power, size and strength advantage over Velasquez, and it will be no easy task to try and take the belt away from Lesnar.

Lesnar not only is a powerful athlete, he can take a beating. As evident in his fight with Shane Carwin.

Will Cain Velasquez become the first-ever Mexican heavyweight champion?

We'll have to tune in to UFC 121 this Saturday night to find out.
