BCS Analysis: Let the Boise State and TCU Conspiracy Begin
If you are a fan of Boise State or TCU, let me get this piece of information out to you immediately. Your team is not making the national title game.
No matter what. Even if they are the only 2 undefeated teams in the nation at the end of the season, they will be in the Sugar or Fiesta Bowl while the national title game has a Big 12 team or Ohio State vs. an SEC team.
Any flaw of a perfect team from the WAC or Mountain West is a title killer; any flaw of a 1 loss team from a major conference is a resume enhancer.
Boise State or TCU couldn't succeed in the weekly grind of the SEC or Big 12 or Big 10, mostly because they aren't in those conferences. It's a great argument the college football establishment makes that there is no way to disprove.
Yeah, Boise State can't survive the same schedule as Auburn because Auburn plays the SEC schedule and Boise State doesn't.
That's like proving that Boise State is better on blue AstroTurf than Auburn. It's a lazy argument made by lazy college football experts who voted Ohio State No. 1 because they are Ohio State. That worked out well.
The elite coaches and voters have shown their wants and desires in full color the last two weeks. Last week, in the coaches poll, Nebraska passed TCU because of their impressive resume and they were obviously better. Until they lost at home.
Nothing in Nebraska's resume showed they were better than TCU and their win at a paper tiger like Kansas State shouldn't have catapulted them over a team that had a shutout unless one was named Nebraska and one was named TCU.
This week, Oklahoma went over TCU in both polls. Now, I understand if people view Oklahoma as better than TCU because of Oklahoma's big win over Florida State. But why was Oklahoma behind them last week?
This week, Oklahoma destroyed Iowa State at home, who absolutely stinks. Beating a team at home 52-0 seems less impressive when the team they beat is coming off a 68-27 loss at home to Utah (another dastardly Mountain West team, until they become pure and move to the Pac-10).
Oklahoma is famous for manipulating the system by running up the score against junk teams like Iowa State. Their BCS ranking of No. 1 showed that their easy rout paid off.
It's not like TCU played horribly this week, they beat BYU 31-3, and have allowed one field goal in 3 weeks.
Yet TCU gets penalized because Oregon State lost, and therefore TCU has zero quality wins. Air Force losing doesn't help TCU, since a ranked Air Force would be a bigger game.
Of course Air Force losing does nothing to harm Oklahoma, nor does a seven-point win over a 2-4 Utah State at home do any damage. Oklahoma has to be better than TCU, because they are Oklahoma.
I hope TCU and Boise State fans see where this is going. No matter who loses, and when they lose, the voters will always make excuses to move teams ahead of your teams.
The winner of LSU and Auburn is moving ahead of TCU next week no matter what. A one-loss Alabama would eventually pass both of them, especially with Oregon State losing and Nevada losing.
Boise State is screwed unless Oregon State beats an undefeated Oregon. A one-loss Ohio State will pass Boise State and TCU because they are Ohio State, and it's happened before.
A perfect Missouri or Oklahoma State will pass both teams because they are from the Big 12, and they are a so much better conference than the Mountain West, just ignore Colorado or Iowa State or Texas A&M or Kansas.
I would like to think that TCU would gain a huge push by beating Utah on the road, but they may be No. 5 or 6 by that point, and any big push may not be enough.
In concept, the BCS actually helps the Boise State's and TCU's of the world. Under the old system, they would never be in big bowl games, or get ABC Saturday Night Games. You would think that seeing their success and quality of play that the stigma of the names would erode.
It's not, "oh, they're Boise State and TCU or even Utah" anymore. They have some presence, and are national teams, even if they are the new teams on the block.
However, the old establishment has to protect their own, and at least this year the voters in the coaches poll will do whatever they can to get a Big 12 team or SEC team or Ohio State above those two.
It's just what they do, and WAC and Mountain West football is tougher to find on TV and news reports, and voters in general are lazy.
Oklahoma has to be better, because they always are (ignore that Fiesta Bowl, Broncos fans). Perception is reality.
Boise State and TCU can take some solace in knowing this recurring nightmare may soon be over. Despite BYU, and their absolute idiocy, the new Mountain West will become a major conference, because the money and success will demand that it does.
Once Nevada and Fresno State screwed BYU in an act of incredible intelligence, it ensured that despite the loss of Utah and the idiots that the new Mountain West will have enough force and sway to get an automatic bid 3-5 years down the road.
Once the conference is perceived on the same level as the Big East and ACC (which they may be better than this year, Big East for sure), then the survivor of a strong conference will be a legitimate player. After all, South Florida almost made the title game three years ago.
On second thought, absolute chaos may work out for Boise State and TCU after all. Let's say that their are four undefeated teams, and they are Michigan State, Missouri, TCU and Boise State.
All of a sudden, the name recognition evens out, as Michigan State doesn't hold the same cache of the Buckeyes and since the Spartans don't play Ohio State and played a hideous non-conference schedule, both Boise State and TCU may stay ahead of them.
Missouri would make the title game since it is the Big 12, but if no other team had 1 loss (which has happened before), then maybe there is a shot.
Too bad that a Missouri-Boise State title game would still lead the polls to vote Auburn No. 1.
