Snap Judgments: Badgered Buckeyes, Husked Nebraska and Florida's Meltdown
The college football gods giveth and taketh away.
Ohio State learned that lesson the hard way.
Even I thought the Buckeyes would book a longer stay at the No. 1 Hotel Resort Casino, but what fun is that if you don't gamble and Mr. Sweater Vest Jim Tressel is not one to gamble.
OSU's Achilles heal struck first with the opening kickoff, but the Badgers did the rest with brute strength and for the second straight weekend a team who normally pushes their opponent around had their will broken at the line of scrimmage.
Down 21-3 at the half Ohio State seemed to be charged with a comeback in the second half. A 77 yard drive and an even more impressive 19 play, 94 yard TD drive served notice to Madison that the Buckeyes weren't going to just lay down.
Unfortunately for OSU fans, neither was Wisconsin and when push came to shove the Badgers bludgeoned the Bucks with a drive of 73 yards on 10 plays capped by a James White 12 yard touchdown scamper.
I was confused in the second quarter when it seemed like Ohio State had something going with Dan Herron on the ground, but then went away from him in the red zone. He had rushes of six, 14, and 16 on the field goal drive, but once OSU got to first and goal they went with two QB rushes and a direct snap to Herron. Why go away from what got you there? They settled for three.
Some will question Tressel's decision to punt with six minutes and change remaining. Well, if the strength of your team is the defense then you have to believe they can get a stop. They couldn't, game over, thanks for playing.
So as it stands, OSU doesn't control its destiny for anything after the loss. Since the Big Ten is still stuck in the dark ages until next season, we won't get that Ohio State-Michigan State matchup, but with a little less than half the season remaining who really knows how it will shake out.
Speaking of the Big Ten expansion, the team that will put that conference in the championship game business, Nebraska, looked prime to lay a beatdown on Texas. We heard all week about how bad Texas was and how the Cornhuskers still had a bitter taste in their mouth from last year's Big 12 title match.
Sadly for them, they are still Nebraska; and Texas, at least as far as they are concerned, is still Texas. Same old story here.
This was supposed to be the break out game for Nebraska. The game that would vault them back to the days of the '90s, but instead it was a reminder that they just aren't quite there yet.
You also have to question Bo Pelini's decision to pull Taylor Martinez. If he's the man, then you have to let him work through the game and find a way. That's how young quarterbacks grow, but instead, Bo makes a confidence crushing move to go with Zac Lee.
Instead of this game being a parting shot for Nebraska against a Big 12 rival, it was a kick in the butt out the door. Good riddance.
Another team getting their butt kicked here recently is a team not accustom to the activity, the Florida Gators.
Gainesville must be in full on meltdown mode after a disastrous home loss to...wait for it...wait for it...Dan Mullen's Mississippi State Bull Dogs. Yes, Mississippi State. If you're keeping score at home and I know that you are, that makes three straight Gator defeats. That should end Florida's streak of 88 straight weeks in the AP poll.
Here are a few more numbers for ya. This is the first three game losing streak in the career of Urban Meyer, the first three game losing streak for Florida since 1988 and the last time they lost two straight home games was in 2003 when they were coached by Ron Zook. Coincidentally, it was the 2004 loss to Mississippi State that sealed Zook's fate in Gainesville.
While no one is expecting the Urban legend to the get the axe, you can believe the blood boiling over offensive coordinator Steve Addazio should reach an all time high and if things don't turn around, which I don't see happening, Mr. Addazio will probably be looking for work elsewhere.
On a positive note, congrats on Dan Mullen for getting a huge win against his mentor as he tries to build Mississippi State back to respectability.
In college basketball news, Auburn took care of business over Arkansas 65-43. Wait what? That was a football game? Yes, Auburn, a team that not too recently was involved in a 3-2 game that set offensive football back 100 years, put 65 points on the Razorbacks.
This game was like playing on XBOX live. You disregard all conventional rules and ideals by just chucking the ball down the field, while your opponent just picks a team with a fast QB and runs around all over.
Ok, so we know Auburn can score and Cam Newton is a force to be reckoned with, but what happens if someone cracks the War Eagle offensive mystery machine? I'm just saying, because it sort of appears to me that they can't really stop anyone.
Next week it's the Tigers vs. the Tigers in Auburn. Will Auburn keep it rolling or will they fall victim to Les Miles and his deal with the devil? Either way is anyone still mad that Auburn hired Gene Chizik over Turner Gill? The Kansas Jayhags are now coming off back-to-back losses to Baylor and Kansas State buy a combine score of 114-14. Well, I mean, at least they scored in both, right?
I'd also like to welcome back South Carolina. Where'd you go? We missed you last weekend, well, I mean, Alabama sure did. Anyway, glad to see that you're back. Hope all is well.
See you all next week.
