Josh Selby, Kansas Jayhawks Patiently Wait for NCAA Ruling

Shae CroninOct 14, 2010

When DMV native and former Lake Clifton (Baltimore) star Josh Selby announced his commitment to the University of Kansas, the Jayhawks were immediately considered a potential Final Four team.

But before Selby and the Jayhawks get things started, the young point guard, his coaches and his teammates must patiently wait for the NCAA to rule on a case that involves questions of academics and amateurism.

Selby was held from enrolling at the university for three weeks but has continued to practice and workout with his team since the beginning of September.

“We hope to have a resolution to it sooner rather than later. But I don’t know when that will be,” head coach Bill Self said. “I certainly understand why this has taken a little bit of time but I do think there will be a positive conclusion. Hopefully, shortly. But I don’t know that to be a fact.”

Selby is also involved in an issue pertaining to a relationship with Robert Frazier, the business manager for Carmelo Anthony (also a Baltimore native).

Although Selby and his family have stated Frazier to be a family friend ever since Selby’s mother and he met in grade school, the NCAA finds it necessary to “investigate the relationship.”

Luckily for Self and his Jayhawks, they recruited and signed a fine young man to represent their program in Josh Selby. When addressing the media for the first time since arriving on campus last summer, Selby admitted his true feelings regarding the allegations and current investigation.

"It was pretty lonely at first, but my teammates stayed behind me, supported me, motivated me [by] being there, relaxing my mind, taking it out of my mind. I’m just thankful I have the teammates I have because without them, I wouldn’t have made it through this."

When asked what qualities he brought to the team, Selby thought for a minute and replied.

"Toughness. Somebody who can lead you, somebody who’s going to motivate you to hard work and can score, not just play. I want to win. That’s my big concern, winning."

Although people from the DMV may have already known what kind of young man Josh Selby is, perhaps others are beginning to realize his true strengths in a time of slight turmoil.

A special thanks to Josh Selby for representing the DMV. Best of luck in what’s bound to be a great season.
