Canada's Atheletes turning it around

Joel LefevreAug 19, 2008

An incredible second week of performances has seen Canada suddenly move from the basement in the medal count to a remarkable 13 in the span of a week.  A series of medals Tuesday has helped Canada surpass they're final mark of 12 set in Athens.

Following a remarkable silver medal performance by Triathlete Simon Whitfield Canada's amazing performances continues on Tuesday.  That performance was followed by a silver medal in the 3m springboard diving by Alexandre Despatie, before Jason Burnett won a silver in Trampoline, and finishing off with a bronze medal from Priscilla Lopes-Schliep the women's 100m hurdles.  These great performances have helped move Canada into a tie for 12th place in the medal standings with the Netherlands.

For Despatie the silver was a huge victory in itself afteran injury plagues season, ''My silver medal is gold to me because of all the bad things that happened to me this year,'' he said. ''I was able to get it together.''  It was also sweet vindication after his disappointing fifth place finish in synchro diving.  The highly touted diver who dominated the sport before the Athens games dug in deep and gave us all a reason to be proud.

Burnett's silver in trampoline comes a day after Karen Cockburn captured a silver in women's trampoline.  Burnett finished second with a total of 40.7 points.  The 21 year old was equally as elated with his performance, ''That rocked,'' he said. ''That was awesome.''  His women's counterpart Karen Cockburn was equally as excited for him, ''He did an amazing performance tonight,'' said Cockburn. ''He set the bar so high we know it would be really difficult to beat. We're just so proud of him.''

Lopes-Schliep finished the day strong with a bronze medal in the women's 100m hurdles, Canada's first olympic track medal since the 96 games in Atlanta.  It was a sweet and unexpected victory for her as only month's before the games Canadian favourite Perdita Felicien was forced to pull out of these games due to injury.  The 25 year old from Whitby,Ontario ran in 12.64 second to make it onto the podium.  ''I feel like I've jumped out of my body, went to heaven and back,'' Lopes-Schliep said. ''This is a huge accomplishment, it went by so fast and here I am with a medal.''

So another impressive day for Canada and with the likes of Adam Van Koeverden on world record form and still to compete the likelihood of more medals appear to be coming.
