View from Kingsmeadow, Volume 10: High Stakes At the Racecourse
In the continuing chase to catch Crawley Town in the Football Conference National, Terry Brown's AFC Wimbledon continued their 2010-11 campaign with a cross-border trip to Wales and the town of Wrexham where they clash with the Robins of Dean Saunders's Wrexham F.C. at the historic Racecourse Ground.
"The congested fixture list that gave us six games in seventeen days will come to an end on Saturday at Wrexham," Brown said on Thursday. "With three wins, one defeat and one draw out of the first five I hope we can continue the trend and get something out the game at Wrexham.
"Apart from the obvious need to accumulate points my main worry during this hectic period was picking up injuries. After checking everyone this morning, I am glad to say that we appear to be able to pick from the squad that played against Mansfield.
"Hopefully we also have good news about Brett Johnson. He is progressing very well and Mike Rayner is looking at between 10 and 14 days for Brett to be fit again. Lee Minshull is progressing steadily but it will still be several weeks before he is able to resume training,
"I am sure those fans who made the long journey to Mansfield on Tuesday will try to get to the game at Wrexham and I very much hope that we can send them home as happy as we did on Tuesday night."
After a tough start to the season, Wrexham recovered to remain unbeaten at home, scoring 20 goals this year. Their last 11 games have seen the Robins drop just one match.
Wimbledon were looking to exact payback for a dismal 1-0 defeat that saw limited finishing results and dubious decision making by the referees involved.
Andrew Mangan of Wrexham led the scoring in the 27th minute to make it 1-0 Robins heading into the break. But in the 47th minute, a shot from Christian Jolley made it 1-1.
Late in the second half, super-sub Rashid Yussuf gave the Dons a well-earned goal in the 84th minute to give AFC Wimbledon a 2-1 victory.
Combined with a 1-1 draw between Crawley and Barrow, Wimbledon are now one point behind the Red Devils for the top spot in the Football Conference National.
Up next for the Dons is a match at Kingsmeadow against the Tynesiders of Gateshead F.C. Kickoff at the Cherry Red Records Stadium is scheduled for October 16, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. ET.
