Ryder Cup Questions To Consider For The Future Of The Competition
I'm wondering if it is entirely all that faire for the Ryder Cup to be contested in the manner it presently is. I'm speaking of the time of year and location as it currently is, especially since it almost always means some type of aberrant weather.
Now, I'm certainly NOT making excuses for the performance of the USA team this year, but as we all know, the event was adversely affected, by, I contend, the uncooperative weather everyone knew, in advance, would be part of the contest !!!
Here are some questions to ponder:
LOCATION: Since the majority of the PGA Tour Season is contested in, arguably, the best of conditions, why isn't the Ryder Cup done so as well ???
We all know that the PGA Tour moves around country to find the best weather in the part of the country that offers it ... Majors are contested the same way ...
This year's contest was altered to fit TV, and in the end, the weather played such a major part that it even countered the efforts to accommodate TV !!! That's certainly not good for the players, the game, nor the competition !!!
I'm one of those people who believe that you contest events of weight in the "mean" weather conditions in which the players are normally expected to play. That's for BOTH sides ... So, why, then is ANY event which has so much at stake, from the jingoist's perspective, even allowed in such an aberrant location ???
TIME OF YEAR: Using the same logic as above, why is the Ryder Cup contested at a time of year when the players have just finished competing in the last major competition, when, arguably, they may be simply worn out ???
We all know that some players "peak" the longer they play, but then some players do not.
The FedEx Championship just concluded it's format the week before, and then the Ryder Cup players have time to go home, grab a change of luggage, and head off to be part of a team event, when none of them are inherently "team" players.
Once again, why do we want to schedule ANY event, which has so much "pride" associated with it, at a time of year when the crux of the season is winding down ???
SELECTION OF THE CAPTAIN: Now, this one is purely for the USA ... Why is this "automatic succession" model used to pick a Captain ???
Shouldn't the Captain be someone who is a natural leader ??? All things considered, if the media didn't focus on Corey Pavin, then some might have missed him except for the fact that he was dressed like the rest of the team !!!
I believe that the Captains ought to be part of the Match Play competition, and that they ought to be the first-off on the last day. That would force the selection of the Captain to be true leader both on and off the course !!!
All-in-all, being an insomniac these days, I was looking forward to seeing the whole Ryder Cup, but the weather, the locale, and the whole lack-lustre drone of this year's event did more to put me to sleep than all the Ambien one could take !!!
