Liverpool Agree on Sale to Boston Red Sox Owners

Will TideyOct 5, 2010

The owners of the Boston Red Sox have brought Liverpool football club, subject to Premier League approval and the settlement of a dispute between Liverpool board members.

NESV is owned by John W. Henry, and also controls Fenway Park, a NASCAR team, and the New England Sports TV network.

Liverpool owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks have been looking to sell for some time, with the club lumbered with huge debts, but have remained resolute they will not countenance a bargain price.

All of which suggests NESV value the worldwide reach of Liverpool FC enough to soak up some of the club's debts and look to rebuild the club from the ground up—starting with the development of a new stadium.

"I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive," Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton said.

"The board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at the Red Sox.

"We've met them in Boston, London and Liverpool over several weeks and I am immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club.

"By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team. I am only disappointed that the owners (Tom Hicks and George Gillett) have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale."
