New England Patriots: Breaking Down Tom Brady and Randy Moss' Connection Issues

Patrick ClarkeOct 5, 2010

Lost in the celebration of the Patriots 41-14 stomping of the Miami Dolphins on Monday night was Randy Moss.

The superstar wide out finished the game with zero catches, zero anything, and never really looked like much of a threat.

Still though, the Patriots are 3-1, and tied for the lead in the AFC East. But Monday night's game begs the question, where has Brady to Moss been recently?

Through four weeks, Moss has only nine receptions, and five of those came in a week 1 drubbing of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sure, Wes Welker is back to his old ways having already caught 26 passes this season, but even rookie tight end Aaron Hernandez has 18 catches and currently leads New England in receiving (240 yards).

It's much too easy to say that teams are shutting down Moss in order to make Tom Brady beat them with other receivers, there has to be more to it.

Three of Moss' four catches since week 1 were touchdowns. There is no doubt that he is one of the most lethal big play threats in the league, but we saw no sign of that Monday night.

With players like Hernandez, and Woodhead coming on for the Patriots as of late, Moss' production could take a hit, and who knows what that means for his attitude.

After all, we all remember when Moss came out of nowhere after a week 1 victory with a 15 minute rant about his lack of support within the Patriots' organization.

We all remember Randy Moss from Minnesota and Oakland, many would say he is different this time around, but if his declining numbers equal up to a declining record for New England, don't be surprised if Moss becomes unhappy.

The solution, Tom Brady, the man responsible for getting Moss the ball. It's shocking that only nine of Brady's 85 completions have gone to Moss, but regardless the two have still hooked up on a few highlight reel plays; including Moss' one-handed TD catch against the Jets.

Maybe it's that we are so used to seeing these two hook up for big plays every Sunday that we forget Brady has other targets that are just as capable as Moss.

Who knows.

It's definitely too early to tell if these struggles will become a trend for Brady and Moss, but the two connect again, the tension will only progress.
