Michigan 42 Indiana 35: Denard Robinson Leads Wolverines To Another Win.
A game like this might be something Michigan fans are going to have to get used to.
The Wolverines(5-0,1-0), led by Heisman Trophy front-runner Denard Robinson capped a thrilling 42-35 victory with a last second touchdown to keep Michigan unbeaten on the season.
In a game that featured almost zero defense—Robinson was the star again.
Robinson became the first quarterback in NCAA history to throw for 200 yards and rush for 200 yards two times in a career. Considering Robinson is just a sophomore with five starts under his belt, that is pretty impressive. He wasn't the only one on the field putting up nice numbers.
Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell had a career day while setting Indiana records for attempts, completions and yards. When the dust settled Chappell was 45 of 64 for 480 yards, three touchdowns and one interception (his first of the season). It wasn't enough.
Robinson took the second offensive play Michigan ran 77 yards for a touchdown. He took the last play Michigan ran 4 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds of the game, finishing off the upset hopes of the Hoosiers.
Everything in between was pretty much the same. The Wolverines offense was so effective, and struck so quickly, that Indiana doubled the amount of plays ran, and dominated the time of possession. It didn't matter, as the Wolverines still came out on top.
Surprisingly, both defenses showed up to play a little bit in the 4th quarter. For almost the first 14 minutes of the final quarter the score stayed the same. The Wolverine offense seemed to cool off a bit after Robinson came out of the game for a couple plays after landing hard on the same knee he bruised the previous week. Indiana also stalled on a couple drives in the 4th quarter. It was a stunning change of pace to a game that was almost all offense up to that point.
What was even more frustrating for Michigan was their inability to score when they had the lead. It started with a fumble on the goal line when Michigan was poised to go up 21-7 and didn't stop there. Michigan had several chances to open up a cushion between themselves and the Hoosiers but failed every time.
Finally with just over a minute left Indiana connected for the game tying touchdown. It was around that same time Denard Robinson busted out of the phone booth, dread-locked cape flapping in the wind to save the day.
The Wolverines got the ball back with 1:15 on the clock, and their Superman did what he does best. First he ran for eight yards, then 17. Two plays later he connected on a long pass play to Junior Hemingway to put Michigan at the four yard line. Fittingly, Robinson finished off the drive himself, running left for a four-yard touchdown, and the Michigan win.
Game Ball goes to...
Denard Robinson. Are you surprised? I'm not. Robinson was 10-16 passing for 277 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He ran the ball another 19 times for 217 yards and another two touchdowns. If you are keeping track that is 494 yards of total offense and five touchdowns.
Is he really the front-runner for the Heisman? Um, Yeah.
