Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins, or Michael Vick vs. Donovan McNabb?

Sean SmithOct 1, 2010

From the day McNabb was drafted by the Eagles, Philadelphia fans spurned him. Even as he proved himself to be one of the top quarterbacks in the league, the city continued to call for McNabb's replacement. Some Philadelphia fans even called for Kevin Kolb to start over McNabb last season.

I don't want to make it seem like I'm making a sweeping generalization of Philadelphia fans as anything less than fans in other sports cities, but... I kid. The passion and dedication of Philadelphia fans is something that most sports cities can only dream of matching.

Despite leading the Eagles to five NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl appearance, McNabb was traded to the Redskins following the 2009-2010 season. In his first three games as the Redskins quarterback, McNabb has been somewhat inconsistent in throwing for 833 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.

That inconsistency has project to the team's performance as the Redskins upset the Dallas Cowboys in week one, yet suffered a deflating loss to the St. Louis Rams in week three.

Meanwhile, Michael Vick has been reborn since taking over McNabb's old post at starting quarterback in Philadelphia. A Kolb concussion opened the door for Vick to receive his first every-down playing time since returning to the NFL from spending time in jail for orchestrating a dog-fighting ring.

Having just the second half to prove himself, Vick made the most of the opportunity by rushing for over 100 yards and throwing for 175 yards and one touchdown. Although the Eagles still lost that game to the Packers, Vick's performance in that game and a week two win over Detroit gave Andy Reid the confidence to name Vick the starting quarterback over Kolb.

While McNabb has surely had this game circled on his calender since becoming a member of the Redskins, he probably would have preferred a chance to outperform Kolb rather than the resurrected Vick. Nevertheless, McNabb is going to be on a mission to show Philadelphia he remains the best of all three of those quarterbacks.

For McNabb, outperforming Vick individually will not suffice. The Redskins will also need to win for McNabb to be content. The question is: Will McNabb and the Redskins' offense be able to compensate for the team's 31st ranked pass defense, which surrendered 30 points against the Rams last week. With the early-season division lead on the line, McNabb will need to tune out the inevitable heckling from Philadelphia fans and focus on beating the Eagles rather than beating Vick.
