Jay Buhner, RF 1989-2001

Jay "Bad to the Bones" Buhner, an all-time Mariners' fan favorite. His quirky personality and explosive bat will live on forever in Mariners' fans heart's everywhere. In 1988, he was acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade for Ken Phelps. This trade is considered one of the best made by the Mariners, ever.

Buhner would have his first significant season in 1991 when he hit 27 home runs and drove in 77 runs. After '91, Bones would go on to hit more than 20 home runs in seven consecutive years. Jay would reach his peak in the '95 season when he hit 40 dingers and drove in 121 runs.

His personal best slugging % was also reached in '95, at .566. Without him, the 1995 season wouldn't have been so successful. He ended up finishing 5th in MVP voting that year behind his teammate, Edgar Martinez.

The next year in '96 Buhner hit 44 home runs and drove in 144 runs, both would stand as his single season records. Despite this power surge, he kept his average at a respectible .271. The '96 season would mark his only all-star appearance in his career.

Over his fifteen year career, Buhner would go on to average 34 home runs and 106 runs batted in. Besides his bat, Buhner was known for his rocket arm and even won a gold glove in the 1996 season at right field.

After playing a minor role in the success of the 2001 team, fan-favorite Bones hanged up the cleats. After retiring, he would go on to broadcast a few games from 2003-2006, and now is working as a coach in the M's minor league system. His number, 19, stands to be retired soon. He has already been enshrined in the Mariners hall of fame with Dave Niehaus, Edgar Martinez, and Alvin Davis.

His infamous bald head and beard made him one of the most recognizable players in the Majors. Buhner Buzz Cut Night offered fans to get their heads shaved, and some fans were lucky enough to get their heads shaved by Jay himself. If you were bald or got your head shaved you were granted free admission.
