National Signing Day 2010: Two More USC Signings and Other News

Rick McMahanFeb 4, 2010

After the lights had been turned off and reports had been filed, Lane Kiffin and his staff were still busy signing recruits, making for a long but productive day for the new regime in Trojanland.

Two more important signings have been reported by the Trojans, and they help fill two areas of need for USC.

Soma Vainuku, a 6'1", 260-lb. bowling ball of a fullback who runs a 4.6 forty, inked a letter of intent with the Trojans late last night.

Vainuku, who also played linebacker for his high school in Eureka, Ca., is an important "get" for the Trojans, who must start grooming depth in preparation for Stanley Havili's graduation.

Also giving a verbal commitment but yet to sign an LOI is Marquis Jackson, the brother of Trojan defensive end Malik.

Jackson, also a defensive end, is a 6'4", 235-lb. monster who uses speed as his best attribute in honing in on any quarterback in his sights.

Marquis Jackson had been long thought to be a UCLA commit, so in addition to his physical skills, the Trojans also deprived the Bruins of a talented player.

However, as of this writing there are still players who have committed but have yet to sign a letter of intent, which must be filed by April 1.

Among these, Seantrel Henderson, the massive offensive lineman from Minnesota, has been well documented as saying he will wait until USC appears before the NCAA infractions committee to see if there are severe sanctions coming the Trojans' way.

However, in addition to Jackson and Henderson, there are others who have yet to sign their LOIs according to Scout.com.

Both Kyle Prater and Dillon Baxter have yet to sign an LOI, but both of these athletes are already enrolled and are eligible to participate in spring practice for the Trojans.

The fact that Scout.com doesn't list either athlete as having signed his letter of intent may simply be an oversight on their part and shouldn't cause angst among the Trojan faithful.

Finally, Latwan Anderson, the five-star recruit from Ohio, will be taking a trip to USC and may very well sign with the Trojans, giving an already fantastic class just that much more "ooomph!"

So, a great class gets even better with the two late signees and could possibly get an added kick with the signing of Anderson.

In the final analysis, Lane Kiffin and company may have delivered an even better class than Pete Carroll could have, and it portends of great things to come for the Trojans.

Just think of what Kiffin can do with a whole year under his belt in the southland.

I'm sure Trojan fans are doing just that...
