Thomas Castellanos Commits to Texas Tech After Brendan Sorsby's Exit for 2026 CFB Season

Quarterback Thomas Castellanos committed to Texas Tech for the 2026 college football season on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Castellanos previously suited up for Florida State in 2025.

Texas Tech initially had quarterback Brendan Sorsby on its roster after he won a temporary injunction that allowed him to stay eligible as remained the focus of an NCAA investigation for gambling. Sorsby eventually dropped his lawsuit against the NCAA and became ineligible again, turning his focus instead toward the 2027 NFL draft.

After Sorsby's departure, the Red Raiders turned to Will Hammond as their starting quarterback following a positional battle with Kirk Francis.

Hammond served as a depth option for Texas Tech last season before suffering a torn ACL in Oct. 2025.

Given his uncertain outlook heading into the team's 2026 campaign after recovering from the injury, it's understandable that an experienced option such as Castellanos was brought in.

Castellanos has started 32 games throughout his four years at Florida State, Boston College and UCF.

He initially declared to the NFL draft in Dec. 2025, but chose to pursue a fifth college season and enter the transfer portal after he was granted a temporary restraining order by a Kentucky judge.

During Castellanos' lone year with Florida State, he completed 58.3 percent of his throws for 2,760 yards and 15 touchdowns compared to nine interceptions. He also made plays with his legs, rushing for 557 yards and nine scores.

Pete Nakos of On3.com reported that Castellanos is open to being used as a wide receiver with Texas Tech and it "won't be a surprise" to see the team explore a position change for him.

The Red Raiders will start the 2026 season with a clash against ACU on Sept. 5.
