Brian Billick To Notre Dame: Is The Gambit Worthed?

Tomas HernandezNov 28, 2009

Notre Dame current season is far from what was expected after Spring Camp and far removed from what Coach Weis expectations were at the end of last season.

It is difficult trying to defend Weis after his teams, from 2007 through the current team have failed to have convincing victories.

November is considered the month that determines the quality of a college team. Most of the BCS bound teams remain undefeated during the month of November.

While in 2005 and 2006 his record in November was 7-1, during the following three seasons his teams records have dropped to 3-8 pending today's game against Stanford. I will not be surprised if the record ends up being 3-9.

In favor of Charlie Weis, and in contrast with his predecessors, he has been able to recruit.

He found a team empty of depth and will be turning, if fired, a team in the process of replenishing the quality players the Irish will need to return back to relevance.

Maybe, and only maybe this is the trait that will save his job for one more season.

As it seems will be the case, Charlie Weis will be fired after Stanford game. In this case scenario, coaches such as: Brian Kelly, Gary Patterson, Jim Harbaugh. Pat Fitzgerald, and Mike Leach would be more appealing substitutes for the job.

Since Lou Holtz departure, Notre Dame has failed to hire a coach that can carry the Irish back to relevance. I do not think that Mr. Billick will pull this team up.

Notre Dame does not have time to allow a coach experimenting while the victories against top 20 teams are hard to come around. Notre Dame will need a coach who has proved to win in the circuit.

By turning one more time to an ex-NFL coach, Notre Dame will be gambling again with an unproven character to coach at college level within the requirements of the school.

Mr. Billick was a good NFL coach. He has proven his worth with a winning record (85-67, 5-3 in postseason, and a Super Bowl victory) but he is not a college coach.

If Mr. Billick is hired as Notre Dame coach, the Irish will have to accept going through a couple of years of mediocre results while the Mr. Billick learns the ins and outs of college football at Notre Dame and re-learns from his college experience at Utah State (86-88).

It will be my argument that if Notre Dame only coaching replacement option would be Mr. Billick, the Irish would be better served by keeping Charlie Weis as he has painstakingly gone through the motions of learning to coach, learning to coach at college level at Notre Dame and he is obviously able to recruit quality players for Notre Dame.
