Champions League 2019: Top Scorers After Tuesday's Round of 16 Results

Tom SunderlandFeb 12, 2019

Paris Saint-Germain handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer his first defeat as Manchester United manager after triumphing 2-0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League last-16 clash at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Presnel Kimpembe rose to score his first goal for the French giants in the absence of injured duo Neymar and Edinson Cavani. Kylian Mbappe compounded United's second-half woes with his fourth goal of the European campaign, taking him into the competition's top 10 scorers this term.

The Red Devils are due back at the Parc des Princes on March 6 but will also be missing key man Paul Pogba for the trip after he was sent off in the 89th minute for a second caution.

AS Roma also went in scoreless before the break in their duel at home to Porto, but Nicolo Zaniolo beat Iker Casillas twice in the second period to give the Giallorossi a two-goal lead.

The Stadio Olimpico hosts couldn't hold it, however, as Adrian Lopez bagged a potentially crucial away goal to give the Dragons high hopes returning to Portugal for the second leg on March 6.

Mercurial Mbappe Too Much in Manchester

The first 45 minutes at Old Trafford would have convinced just about anyone it was hosts United who would take a cushion back to the Park des Princes, but PSG were fully deserving of their second-half turnaround.

Mbappe caused panic among the United defence at times, and his electric speed split the space between Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly to drill in PSG's second from close range, via B/R Live (U.S. only):

Combined with his four assists, Mbappe has now had a direct hand in eight Champions League goals this season—only Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, the current top scorer on eight goals, has contributed as much.

That strike came swiftly after Nemanja Matic was caught sleeping at the back post from a corner, and Kimpembe steamrolled in to tuck home a volley.

While PSG may be considered by some a side that relies too heavily on a handful of stars, OptaJoe testified to theirs as one of the most balanced scoring teams in Europe:

Pogba's second yellow at the end of affairs means he finished firmly second to his French compatriots on Tuesday and will miss the trip to Paris at the beginning of March.

Zaniolo Insanity Steals the Show in Roma

Less than a year after moving to the Stadio Olimpico from Inter Milan, Zaniolo had his first truly memorable Champions League night on Tuesday after he bagged a match-winning brace at home to Porto.

Roma were frustrated in their first-half attempts to penetrate Porto's lines, but Zaniolo came good with two goals in the space of six minutes to lift the home support to its feet (U.S. only):

The ex-Inter youngster held his nerve in what was his first knockout appearance in the Champions League, a precursor of what's to come for one of Italy's biggest prospects.

Gracenote Live attested to the starlet coming second to another former Inter prodigy, Mario Balotelli, as a young Italian asset making his mark in Europe:

Roma will hope the 19-year-old turns out a bit more well-tempered than Balotelli and that this is only the first of many successful evenings he'll enjoy in this competition.
