NFL Rumors: Jets Don't Want to Be on 'Hard Knocks' Despite Interest

HBO has interest in bringing the New York Jets to Hard Knocks.

Apparently, the feeling is not mutual.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported the news, noting Jets executives have no plans to make their team available for the series. The NFL cannot force the Jets into accepting any offer from HBO because the team has a first-year head coach and appeared on the show within the last 10 years.

The pool of potential teams is not especially large due to upheaval in the coaching ranks. NFL teams made eight new hires during the 2019 offseason alone.

The Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Oakland Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Washington are the teams that cannot refuse the NFL's request outright under league rules.

The Jets have a group of intriguing young players led by quarterback Sam Darnold and a coaching staff that includes colorful figures like Gregg Williams, so it's not hard to see why HBO would have interest. Given Adam Gase's rather abrupt departure from Miami and the need to focus on Darnold's development, though, it's also easy to understand the Jets' hesitance at having their training camp televised.

Hard Knocks teams have missed the playoffs in four of the last five seasons. Teams have made the postseason five times in 13 seasons of the show.
