Joel Embiid Fouled, Marcus Smart Traveled on Final Play, Says NBA's L2M Report

The NBA announced Thursday that officials missed two key calls against the Boston Celtics in the waning seconds of their 114-112 Game 5 win over the Philadelphia 76ers at TD Garden on Wednesday evening

According to the league's official Last Two Minutes Report, Celtics center Aron Baynes should have been called for a shooting foul when Sixers big man Joel Embiid attempted a game-tying layup with 14.6 seconds remaining in regulation.

The report stated Baynes made "contact to Embiid's arm that affects his shot attempt near the rim."

Additionally, the L2M confirmed officials missed a traveling violation on Celtics guard Marcus Smart with 1.5 seconds remaining when he intercepted Ben Simmons' desperation full-court pass from the opposite baseline.

The league said the infraction is "observable in enhanced video."

"Smart gathers the ball while landing on his right foot, after which he steps back with his left (establishing it as his pivot foot), then right," the league wrote. "He then steps slightly with his left again before jumping to release the ball."

Both plays can be viewed below:

Still, the Sixers had their chances.

Not only did Embiid fail to convert from point-blank range (through contact), but sharpshooter JJ Redick came up empty on wide-open three that would have put the Sixers up by five with 1:11 to go.

Combine those two misses with Dario Saric's turnover with 37.8 seconds remaining, and Philadelphia left the door wide open for the Celtics to end the series in five games.

Boston now turns its attention to Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, which is scheduled to get underway Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
