Bryce Petty Reportedly Claimed off Waivers by Dolphins After Release by Jets

Joseph ZuckerMay 4, 2018

The Miami Dolphins reportedly claimed quarterback Bryce Petty off waivers from the New York Jets.

Field Yates of ESPN first reported the update Friday.

In a move widely expected, the Jets waived Petty on Thursday. New York signed Teddy Bridgewater and re-signed Josh McCown earlier this offseason and then selected Sam Darnold with the No. 3 pick in the 2018 draft.

It was only a matter of time before the Jets let Petty go.

A fourth-round draft pick in 2015, Petty appeared in 10 games for New York, throwing for 1,353 yards, four touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Although his numbers leave a lot to be desired, Petty wasn't going to remain available for very long. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the Jets had received some trade inquiries for the former Baylor star, while NJ Advance Media's Darryl Slater noted a team could pick up Petty under the terms of his rookie contract.

Even with his lackluster resume, Petty's 2018 salary, $705,000, is a bargain for a backup quarterback. Mike Glennon signed with the Arizona Cardinals for two years and $8 million, and he may finish the year as the team's No. 3 quarterback.

Adding Petty is a low-cost move that's unlikely to deliver a significant return.

The Jets haven't been great at developing quarterbacks, so some of Petty's struggles could simply be down to his surroundings. With that said, he completed just 53.1 percent of his passes and had a 57.7 passer rating in the Big Apple.

But taking a flier on Petty makes sense for the Dolphins, one of the Jets' AFC East rivals. The draft is over, and the best free agents have already found new homes. Petty certainly adds depth to Miami's roster, and he has starting experience if he's called upon to replace Ryan Tannehill.

He'll compete with Brock Osweiler and David Fales for the backup role initially.
