Suns Head Coach Rumors: Jay Triano Told He Is Out of Running for Phoenix Job
After serving as the team's interim coach for the majority of the 2017-18 season, Jay Triano will not become the full-time head coach of the Phoenix Suns.
John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 reported Sunday that Triano has been notified he is out of the running to be the next head coach.
The 59-year-old went 21-58 in 79 games in charge of the Suns this past season.
He took over for Earl Watson, who was fired just days into the season after an 0-3 start. However, the Suns weren't much better for the rest of the campaign and finished with an NBA-worst 21-61 overall record.
Triano was in his second year with the Suns organization and his 15th on an NBA staff, including an 87-142 run with the Toronto Raptors from 2008-11. Unfortunately, the team didn't feel he was the right fit to lead the team next season and beyond.
Phoenix had cast a wide net of experienced options as part of the offseason coaching search.
Per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer withdrew his candidacy after meeting with the team, but David Fizdale, Steve Clifford, Kevin McHale, Frank Vogel and David Blatt were also interviewed.
Spurs assistant James Borrego also interviewed with the franchise last week, per Wojnarowski.
It seems by ruling out Triano, the front office is at least narrowing down its options.
