Celtics to Face 76ers in Round 2 After Win vs. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bucks
The Boston Celtics rolled into the second round of the playoffs with a 112-96 Game 7 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at TD Garden on Saturday night.
Al Horford paced the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed with a postseason career-high 26 points and eight rebounds in the elimination tilt, while Terry Rozier and Jayson Tatum added 26 and 20 points, respectively.
The defining sequence of Tatum's evening came late in the third quarter, when he swatted Shabazz Muhammad on one end and drilled a three on the other to put the Celtics up 16 and put the Bucks in a serious hole:
Rozier then slammed the door shut by dropping 12 fourth-quarter points:
Tatum and Rozier's clutch stylings played a big part in setting up a second-round showdown with the Philadelphia 76ers, to be sure, but in true Celtics fashion, it was a collective effort that sealed the deal.
While threes didn't fall at a rapid clip—Boston shot 9-of-26 from beyond the arc—the Celtics pounded the paint and crashed the offensive boards to wear down a Bucks team that lacked the punch necessary to keep pace.
All told, they scored 60 of their 112 points in the paint and mounted an 11-4 edge in the offensive rebounding department.
The Celtics also slowed Giannis Antetokounmpo to the point where he wasn't able to take over. The instrumental contributor in that regard was Semi Ojeleye, who threw up resistance every time Antetokounmpo touched the ball.
While Giannis was able to scrape his way to 22 points, he needed 17 shots to get there and found operating room hard to come by as Ojeleye fought him for precious inches of real estate all over the floor.
Khris Middleton (32 points) and Eric Bledsoe (23 points)—who was greeted by a chorus of "Who is Bledsoe?" chants—tried to pick up the slack, but the Bucks' general lack of offensive ingenuity and off-ball movement once again capped their scoring ceiling.
Plus, interim head coach Joe Prunty rolled out 11 different players in a do-or-die setting, including one puzzling lineup that included Jason Terry, Jabari Parker and Shabazz Muhammad.
Those decisions will undoubtedly be under the microscope for days to come, and they're sure to be at the forefront of minds across the Bucks' front office as they eye a new head coach in the coming weeks.
The Celtics, meanwhile, are headed for an all-Atlantic Division affair in Round 2.
Their series against the Sixers will tip off Monday at 8 p.m. ET on TNT.
