White Sox Pitcher Danny Farquhar in Stable Condition After Brain Surgery

Joseph ZuckerApr 22, 2018

Chicago White Sox relief pitcher Danny Farquhar underwent brain surgery resulting from the aneurysm he suffered Friday night, White Sox vice president Ken Williams announced.

"He's a fighter, and he's in the fight of his life right now," Williams said, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale. "They had to do another surgery, cracking his skull open, and putting a clamp on it. My God. This certainly shows the fragility of life and how we take every day for granted. And it can change in a heartbeat. Literally."

According to Nightengale, Farquhar underwent a procedure Saturday night and is in critical, but stable condition in an ICU unit in a Chicago-area hospital.

Farquhar faced four batters to get the final two outs of the sixth inning in what proved to be a 10-0 defeat to the Houston Astros on Friday night. Upon returning to the dugout, he collapsed and was transported to a medical facility.

The White Sox announced doctors determined Farquhar's brain hemorrhaged in the middle of the game and subsequently discovered a ruptured aneurysm led to bleeding in his brain.

The White Sox have started hanging Farquhar's jersey in the bullpen in a show of support:

Nightengale reported Farquhar will remain hospitalized for at least three weeks while he undergoes continued examination by neurosurgeons.
