Report: Mike Budenholzer Granted Permission by Hawks to Interview for Suns HC
The Phoenix Suns are ramping up their search for a new head coach.
According to ESPN.com's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Atlanta Hawks have granted head coach Mike Budenholzer permission to talk to the Suns about their vacant head coaching position. The two sides will reportedly meet next week.
The Suns fired Earl Watson three games into the 2017-18 season and proceeded the rest of the way with Jay Triano as their interim boss.
The Hawks hired Budenholzer, a longtime San Antonio Spurs assistant, in 2013. The club has gone 213-197 under his leadership in the five seasons since.
The high point came during the 2014-15 campaign, when Atlanta won a franchise-record 60 games and captured the Eastern Conference's No. 1 seed.
According to Wojnarowski, Budenholzer—who stepped down as the Hawks' president basketball of operations last May—has two years and $14 million remaining on his contract.
The Suns are still searching for their first playoff berth since 2010. They finished the 2017-18 season a league-worst 21-61 and have the best odds (25.0 percent) to capture the No. 1 overall pick in next month's draft lottery.
