Gianluigi Donnarumma Reportedly Set for AC Milan Summer Exit

Matt JonesApr 4, 2018

The 2017-18 campaign will reportedly be Gianluigi Donnarumma's last as an AC Milan player.

According to Tuttosport (h/t Calciomercato.com), the derby with Inter Milan will be the last time the 19-year-old plays in the fixture, suggesting a number of big-name clubs are ready to move for the Italy international at the end of the season.

Calciomercato said Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Serie A champions Juventus are all in the hunt for him amid constant speculation about the player's future.

He was involved in a bitter contract dispute at Milan last summer but agreed to sign a four-year contract extension. Prior to the new deal, it was confirmed by Milan that an initial offer had been turned down and they expected him to leave, per BBC Sport.

Unsurprisingly, supporters reacted angrily to the news, and in December, after reports Donnarumma wanted to cancel the deal he had signed, they unfurled a banner at the San Siro criticising the player.

Journalist Gabriele Marcotti provided an image of it:

The banner was enough to reduce Donnarumma to tears, and he had to be consoled by team-mate Leonardo Bonucci after the game.

So all doesn't appear to be well at the San Siro for the youngster, despite the extension signed until 2021 and the fact he has emerged from the Milan youth setup.

If he were to move on, then any side getting Donnarumma would gain one of the most exciting prospects in European football at the moment. Since bursting into the team at the age of 16, the Italy international has cemented his position as one of the best goalkeepers in the game.

As noted here by OptaPaolo, for his age, the teenager has already accrued so much experience:

There's a lot to admire about his game. Although Donnarumma's handling remains a little erratic at times, he's an enormous presence behind the Milan and Italy defence.

The youngster is authoritative coming off his line and quick to shut down attackers when he finds himself in one-on-one situations. His shot-stopping is arguably the strongest facet of his game, as he is able to pull efforts away from corners of the goal with frequency.

For Milan, losing him would be a major blow, as Donnarumma has the potential to be a world-class goalkeeper for many years to come:

Both Real Madrid and PSG could arguably benefit from an upgrade between the sticks, with questions asked of both Keylor Navas and Alphonse Areola, respectively, at times this season.

Meanwhile, Juventus face a big recruitment challenge in the summer, as iconic goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is reportedly poised to retire, per Corriere della Sera (h/t Football Italia).

Milan invested heavily ahead of this season, and they have an exciting young core in place consisting of Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli, Franck Kessie and Hakan Calhanoglu. Losing the goalkeeper, arguably the most important player in the squad, would be galling.
