Gordon Hayward Resumes Running on Court as Part of Injury Rehab
Boston Celtics star Gordon Hayward went through a jogging session Monday for the first time since fracturing his ankle in the Celtics' loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in their opening game of the NBA regular season.
Hayward shared a video from The Players' Tribune, noting it was his "first time running without assistance":
Hayward wrote on his personal website in January he had begun running on an AlterG treadmill. The machine is able to effectively reduce the weight a runner is putting on his or her legs. Hayward said "it feels like you're so much lighter and you're just kind of walking on air" when he had set the AlterG to 20 or 30 percent of his actual body weight.
In March, the 2017 All-Star had progressed to the point where he could work out on the court. The Players' Tribune shared a brief clip of Hayward rehabbing in the gym:
While Hayward's recovery is going well, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens remained adamant the eighth-year swingman won't return to the court this season.
"We've said it before: We can talk about the videos. He's not playing," Stevens said, per ESPN.com's Chris Forsberg. "But he might travel [with the team], and maybe we'll list him as something."
The Celtics have six more games left in the regular season before the playoffs start April 14. Hayward isn't the only notable name out of action for Boston as the team looks ahead to the postseason.
Kyrie Irving hasn't played since the Celtics' 99-97 loss to the Indiana Pacers on March 11 and underwent a "minimally-invasive procedure to remove a tension wire in his left knee." Marcus Smart also had surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right thumb last month that leaves his playoff availability in jeopardy.
