Gregg Popovich Doesn't Know When Kawhi Leonard Will Return from Injury Rehab
San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich once again addressed the status of Kawhi Leonard on Sunday, saying the All-Star forward and his "group" will make a determination on when (or if) he returns this season.
"I don't know when he and his group are going to feel like they are ready to go," Popovich told reporters. "If I knew, he'd be here. When he and his group feel he's ready, then he'll be ready."
Leonard is currently in New York undergoing further evaluation and rehab on his quad, which has limited him to just nine games this season. He has been cleared by team doctors but has not felt 100 percent comfortable on the leg when attempting to play or practice.
The Spurs have given no timetable for his return. The situation has led to some tension within the organization, with the team holding a players-only meeting last month to clear the air. Some players, including Tony Parker, have made comments that seemingly take jabs at Leonard's slow rehab.
“I’ve been through it,” Parker told reporters. “It was a rehab for me for eight months. Same kind of injury (as Leonard’s), but mine was a hundred times worse, but the same kind of injury. You just try to stay positive.”
Leonard was initially injured in Game 1 of the 2017 Western Conference Finals. He returned for a nine-game stretch in December and January, averaging 16.2 points and 4.7 rebounds.
San Antonio is the No. 4 seed currently in the Western Conference despite Leonard's continued absence. Danny Green has been getting the starter minutes at the small forward spot.
