Report: Warriors Won't Attend Stephon Clark Rally Organized by Matt Barnes

Adam WellsMar 31, 2018

The Golden State Warriors aren't expected to attend Saturday's rally for Stephon Clark in Sacramento prior to their game against the Kings

League sources informed ESPN's Chris Haynes that the team would likely skip the rally. Warriors star Kevin Durant said Friday the team supports the event set up by former NBA player Matt Barnes, but he hinted an appearance wasn't likely to happen.

"We definitely want to support it," he said. "Obviously, we have a job to do. We know how important that is. We definitely want to support Matt and everybody that's trying to take a stand, but we can do it in a different way other than going to the event...But I definitely support what's going on."

Haynes did note Warriors head coach Steve Kerr gave his team the option to attend the rally if they wanted to, with Durant and Klay Thompson telling reporters they would discuss it with their teammates before making a final decision.

Barnes told USA Today's Sam Amick he was trying to get players from the Warriors and Kings to attend the rally at Cesar Chavez Plaza.

"I know the Warriors and the Kings both play that night, so I'm going to try to talk to both sides and, you know, the game at this point kind of doesn't really matter," Barnes said. "The (playoff) positions are already set, so I'm hoping (the Warriors) can come out and support."

Clark was shot and killed by Sacramento police, who incorrectly believed he was armed, in his grandmother's backyard on March 18.

In the aftermath, protests have taken place outside of the Kings' Golden 1 Center prior to games against the Atlanta Hawks and Dallas Mavericks. Demonstrators have blocked some of the entrances, leading to fans being stranded outside the arena and tip-off being delayed.

As part of their efforts to work with the community, the Kings announced a partnership Thursday with Black Lives Matter Sacramento and the Build. Black. Coalition that will invest in black youth programs and economic development in the city.
