Zeke Upshaw to Be Honored by Pistons with Call-Up from G League After Death
The Detroit Pistons are celebrating Zeke Upshaw's life by giving him an honorary call-up following his death after he collapsed in a G League game.
Pistons general manager Jeff Bower announced the team's plan to honor Upshaw during Thursday's contest against the Washington Wizards:
In March 24 game for the Grand Rapids Drive, the 26-year-old Upshaw collapsed on the court in the fourth quarter while defending an opponent.
Per Leon Hendrix of Wood 8 TV, Upshaw was taken to the hospital and died two days later because of what Kent County medical examiner Dr. Stephen Cohle said was a "sudden cardiac death."
Jewel Upshaw, Zeke's mother, issued a statement through the Drive regarding her son's death:
"After continued efforts from the medical team at Spectrum Health, Zeke made his transition at 11:16 a.m. To family, friends, teammates, coaches, fans and confidants, thank you for all your prayers and support during this most difficult time. We ask that you respect our privacy at this time. Details of his memorial will be announced at a later date. We'd like to thank the many doctors and nurses at Spectrum Health for their efforts in caring for our son. We'd also like to thank the Grand Rapids Drive for the support they have extended to our family."
Upshaw appeared in 75 games over two seasons for the Drive. He averaged 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per contest.
